Job Summary Under general supervision of the Chief Electrical Inspector, inspects new and existing structures to ensure that wiring and electrical installations comply with city codes and ordinances, Florida Building Code, and National Electrical Code. Work is reviewed through observation and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

Inspects wiring and electrical installations to ensure compliance with city codes and regulations.

Explains electrical codes and regulations to property owners, contractors, and the general public.

Follows up on code enforcement, fire department referrals, and homeowners’ complaints; maintains records of inspections and files permits; prepares violations and fire damage reports.

Attends seminars and training courses to stay informed on new developments in the electrical field and to obtain current information on code changes.

Uses computer hardware and software applications appropriate to the City’s inspection program.

Represents the City positively and professionally when interacting with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation, or sexual orientation.

Maintains effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, and managers.

Performs related work as required for this position description only.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus five (5) years’ experience as an Electrician in a supervisory capacity on a variety of electrical and related installations supplemented by the following additional qualifications set forth in the Florida Building Code.

Certified Electrical Inspector from the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals (BORA) and meet at least one of the following qualifications: Engineer in the electrical discipline, Five (5) years construction experience in the electrical discipline in a supervisory capacity and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master Electrician or Electrical Contractor, or Five (5) years construction experience in the electrical discipline and five (5) years’ experience as an Electrical Inspector certified by BCAIB and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master Electrician or Electrical Contractor, or Seven (7) years construction experience in the electrical discipline and possess a Certificate of Competency as a Master Electrician, or Ten (10) years’ experience as an Electrical Inspector certified by BCAIB.

Current Certificate of Competency or Professional License as a Master Electrician or Electrical Contractor issued by at least one of: Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board, Broward County Central Examining Board of Electricians, Miami‑Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board, Florida Board of Professional Engineers.

Certification of Competency as a Master Electrician or Electrical Contractor issued by: Florida Electrical Contractors Licensing Board, Broward County Central Examining Board of Electricians, Dade County Board, or any other proctored examination graded by an independent testing agency approved by the Board of Rules and Appeals.

Valid Driver’s License with proof of automobile insurance.

Background check—must have an acceptable background record.

Driving abstract—must have an acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of local and national building codes as they apply to electrical wiring, low voltage, and fire alarm systems.

Knowledge of the possible faults and defects in electrical wiring systems and of standard specifications and testing devices and corrective measures.

Knowledge of nomenclature related to the electrical discipline.

Ability to communicate deficiencies and code requirements to the general public, contractors, architects, engineers, and applicable Building Division staff.

Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and operations at any stage of the installation.

Ability to prepare accurate reports.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and plans and maintain records of inspections.

Ability to communicate effectively with the general public, contractors, department heads, and co‑workers.

Skill in the operation of a voltmeter, amp meter, etc.

Skill in the operation of computers and computer software.

Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers, and the public.

Physical Demands Tasks may involve lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be required. Examination Required Education and Background Information: Applicants must provide evidence of meeting the minimum education and experience requirements. Closed competitive positions are open only to employees while open competitive positions are open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications. Examination may consist of written, performance, oral, or other job-related tests. Pass marks and selection criteria are established by the City.
