Overview Dental Hygienist role at Western Wayne Family Health Centers

Responsibilities

Performs oral prophylaxis, scaling, root planing, and polishing to remove stains, plaque, and calculus from tooth surfaces using appropriate instruments.

Examines the mouth to identify dental problems such as periodontal disease or tooth decay; charts findings and reports to the dentist.

Instructs patients on tooth brushing, flossing, denture care, and oral health maintenance; educates on non-prescription medication usage.

Creates and maintains dental treatment charts and records.

Exposes and processes dental radiographs; reads radiographs and alerts the dentist to observations.

Assists the dentist at chair side during restorative, surgical, and endodontic procedures.

Maintains infection control procedures, including sterilization of instruments and disinfection of equipment.

Maintains dental instruments and equipment and ensures security of medications, instruments, and needles.

Schedules dental appointments and maintains appointment records.

Applies topical fluorides, topical anesthetics, and desensitizing agents to teeth and/or gums.

Completes charting, orders inventory, and performs related dental office duties.

Removes periodontal and surgical packs and sutures as needed.

Conducts health screening of incoming patients, including oral examination and referral to dental clinic when applicable.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Responds promptly to customer requests and seeks ways to better meet needs.

Ensures clear and appropriate communications and maintains patient confidentiality.

Education, Experience, Licenses & Certifications

Possession of an associate's degree in dental hygiene.

Two years of experience as a dental hygienist with one year of experience in a dental or medical clinic.

Licensure by the Board of Dentistry as a registered dental hygienist.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of dental prophylaxis equipment and procedures.

Knowledge of dental terminology, equipment, and chair-side assistance.

Ability to evaluate dental status, instruct patients in oral hygiene, and maintain records.

Effective communication skills and ability to handle confidential information.
