Psychiatric Technician (Adolescent Inpatient Unit)

Summary The Psychiatric Technician functions under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse and reports to the Behavioral Health Manager.
Responsibilities include providing direct care and maintaining a safe and therapeutic milieu for patients on the Behavioral Health Unit, serving the adult population, and modeling the organization’s values of Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.
The role requires demonstration of the core Success Factors: instill trust, value differences, patient and community focus, and collaboration.
Responsibilities
Actively participate in the treatment planning process by collaborating with the Professional Nurse to develop the initial problem list and treatment plan.
Communicate individual treatment plans with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Implement the treatment plan in accordance with unit policies and procedures, demonstrating the ability to set consistent and supportive therapeutic limits.
Assist in evaluating care by providing input at team meetings and documenting significant patient/family interactions on the flowsheet in a timely manner.
Observe patients in activities of daily living in accordance with the treatment plan (personal hygiene, ambulation, shaving, etc.).
Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and encourage their participation in recreational and other therapeutic activities and all treatment groups.
Consistently model appropriate and therapeutic interpersonal staff/patient interactions to other patients/families.
Conduct patient rounds to observe and record patient behavior and report any unusual behavior to nursing staff.
Initiate formal supervision and incorporate feedback for improvement in job performance.
Organize and participate in recreational activities and some groups, demonstrating analytical skills and an understanding of psychiatric illnesses.
Maintain cleanliness of the group room and report any safety hazards to the Charge Nurse.
Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with patient/families as well as other members of the healthcare team.
Manages aggressive/destructive behavior by providing timely therapeutic interventions and assists in placing patients in seclusion and/or restraints according to policy and procedures.
Assist in patient and room searches, maintain patient confidentiality, and respect patient rights to privacy.
Qualifications
Baccalaureate in Psychology or a related field, or a CNA license with experience working with the behavioral health population.
Current CPR certification.
Current Brown University Health Crisis Management certification or current enrollment.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the lifespan, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
Preferred experience in a healthcare setting.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions.
Must be able to walk and be on feet for a minimum of 4 hours to perform continuous rounding safety checks on patients.
Compensation Pay Range: $17.00–$26.60 per hour.
