Overview Under general supervision, to lead and supervise Behavioral Health staff and program activities; to provide specialized and intensive behavioral health treatment, counseling, therapy, and services for department clients; to schedule officer-of-the-day duties; to be responsible for an assigned facility, its programs and its security; to serve as a liaison with community, regional, or state agencies; and to do related work as required. This classification is a for cause, exempt position.
Distinguishing Characteristics This is a site supervisor position. Incumbents provide site supervision and leadership at a Behavioral Health Department service site in the county.
Reports To Deputy or Deputy Director of Behavioral Health systems Administrator or other management staff as assigned.
Classifications Supervised Sr./Behavioral Health Nurse, Health Assistant, Clinician I/II, Specialist I/II, other staff as assigned.
Responsibilities (illustrative)
Serve as a site supervisor assisting with service and productivity monitoring at a department service site.
Evaluate performance of subordinates, write and conduct performance evaluations for assigned staff; make case assignments.
Perform or assign officer-of-the-day duties; provide crisis intervention services on the telephone and with walk-in clients, including after-hours crisis on-call/standby work.
Provide staff consultation on complex and difficult cases; provide direct specialized and intensive behavioral health treatment, counseling, therapy, and services to individual clients.
Perform client evaluations, develop treatment and service plans; serve as a liaison for the County with regional and state committees and/or organizations.
Facilitate staff utilization of community resources; implement site policies and procedures related to service delivery, records maintenance, case documentation, building security, site coverage, computer access, and other issues.
Behavioral Health Nurse - Essential Functions
Counsel regarding health status, treatment plans, psychoactive medications, benefits, and side effects of medications.
Provide health education regarding personal hygiene, nutrition, and care and treatment of health problems; teach and demonstrate client care to family members and others.
Consult with other Behavioral Health staff regarding health care issues and client treatment plans; administer injections; oversee client clinic care; order medications and store them securely.
Maintain a variety of client health and medication records; refer individuals and families to appropriate agencies and resources as necessary.
Conduct health appraisals and follow-ups; confer with physicians and other professionals regarding the needs of clients with mental disabilities; prepare reports and maintain records for treatment and development of treatment plans.
Knowledge Of
Thorough knowledge of psychological and social aspects and characteristics of emotional disturbances and mental illness.
Methods and techniques for conducting psychological and social assessments of individuals.
Principles and methods of individual and group counseling.
Human behavior and development; available community resources for behavioral health services.
Problems and needs of the seriously mentally ill; laws and regulations regarding behavioral health and social service programs, especially pertaining to an individual’s legal rights.
Basic knowledge of medications and psychotropic drugs used in behavioral health treatments; principles of fiscal control.
Principles and development of rehabilitation options within the Short-Doyle Act, Medi-Cal Services, Coordinated Care, and Managed Care Systems.
Behavioral Health Nurse – Knowledge
Principles, methods, and practices of general and psychiatric nursing; medical terminology.
Community resources available for support of individuals in various levels of care.
Normal and abnormal growth and development patterns; program planning, evaluations and development principles.
Principles of lead direction, program and work coordination, and training.
Desired Skills

Assess mental disorders and functional impairments, developing effective care plans in consultation with clients and other professional staff.

Training And Experience Any combination of training or experience that would provide the knowledge and skills to successfully perform the listed duties is qualifying. A typical path includes:
Completion of an appropriate graduate degree in psychology, social work, counseling, nursing or closely related fields from an accredited college or university.
Two years of experience at a level equivalent to Sr. Behavioral Health Nurse or Behavioral Health Clinician II in Siskiyou County; a year of providing clinical supervision is preferred.
Special Requirements Behavioral Health Nurse Special Requirements: License: Valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California, Board of Registered Nursing. Possession of a California license as a Psychologist, Clinical Social Worker, or Marriage and Family Therapist is required.
Typical Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; lift and move objects up to 25 pounds; corrected hearing/vision; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer and phone.
