The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) manages water supply, wastewater, stormwater, and pollution reduction to protect public health and the environment for all New Yorkers. DEP is the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the U.S., with nearly 6,000 employees and a vast watershed system.
The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) handles capital projects valued at $23.8B, with an additional $10.5B projected. The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Division ensures compliance with environmental laws and maintains a safe, environmentally compliant construction program. The EHS group supports project lifecycle from design to turnover, including updating the EHS Management System.
BEDC seeks an Environmental Specialist to support the EHS directorate, located upstate in Valhalla, NY, or Kingston, NY. Under the EHS Program Manager, the candidate will provide regulatory guidance, review and revise contract specifications, SOPs, and standards, and ensure project compliance with laws and policies. Responsibilities include managing environmental programs such as Soil Management, Spill Prevention, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention, and potentially training staff on environmental policies.
Preferred Skills:
Environmental Engineering/Science Degree
CPESC or NYS DEC Certification in Erosion and Sediment Control
Knowledge of OSHA, NYSDOL, NYSDEC, USEPA, NYCDOB, FDNY regulations
Experience with ISO EHS Management Systems
Technical report development and presentation skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Valid New York State Driver’s License

Minimum Qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, business or public administration with five years of relevant experience, including two in a supervisory role; or
High school diploma with nine years of relevant experience, including two in a supervisory role; or
Equivalent education and experience. An advanced degree or professional license may substitute for experience, provided two years of supervisory experience are included.
