At Houston Methodist, the Physical/Occupational Therapy Technician (PT/OT Tech) assists PT/OT staff and the direct patient care team with treatment procedures under the direct supervision of a licensed staff member, in an outpatient or inpatient setting. This position performs delegated activities including, but not limited to: patient mobility, assisting patients with exercises or functional activities, transporting patients to and from treatment areas, equipment inspection and maintenance, supply procurement and stocking, infection control processes, and basic office functions. The PT/OT Technician delivers patient care that adheres to rehabilitation standards and guidelines to ensure patient safety and customer service. This position is a member of the direct patient care team. Responsibilities
Interact with patients, staff, and other departments in a caring and courteous manner. Communicate and report pertinent patient care information to the interprofessional care team. Work as a team member, respond to colleagues’ needs, promote a positive work environment, problem-solve, and assist other technicians. Contribute to improvement of the department’s employee satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability. Service/Clinical Functions
Under supervision, assist with delegated treatment plan activities (patient mobility, exercises, transport, equipment inspection, supply procurement, basic office tasks). Reinforce safety awareness and home exercise programs for patients. Prepare work areas and equipment (cleanup/disinfection, gathering equipment, materials, and supplies). Contribute toward improving patient satisfaction scores. Quality/Safety Functions
Collaborate and communicate with the healthcare team regarding patient responses to delegated activities. Gather patient information prior to treatment sessions. Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to quality and safety targets through peer-to-peer accountability and collaboration with the interprofessional team. Finance/Workload Functions
Use resources efficiently to maximize time and equipment utilization. Meet labor productivity standards and effectively manage daily responsibilities. Assist in data gathering for quality improvement projects, daily charge reconciliation, and inventory of supplies. May maintain documentation of patient care procedures when requested. Self-motivate to manage time, minimize overtime, and prioritize tasks. Growth/Innovation
Participate in department projects and hospital committees. Seek opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies and support continual development. Contribute to performance improvement and governance activities. Maintain an ongoing development plan, including advanced skills. High school diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool equivalency, or partial/full post-secondary education). Work Experience
Experience in a healthcare setting is highly preferred. Licenses and Certifications - Required
BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to safely perform the essential functions with ongoing competency assessments and evaluations. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions, especially for safety-related activities. Strong customer service orientation and clear communication with patients, families, and coworkers. Interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills across the healthcare team; commitment to excellent customer service. Proficient computer skills and ability to use standard rehabilitation equipment. Ability to follow treatment plans, adapt to multiple priorities, and problem-solve with minimal supervision. Ability to provide a supportive environment that enhances patient quality of life.
