As a
Field Service Technician-Network Specialist
you will have overall responsibility for maintaining a highly reliable network of systems including the central office switch, carrier and transmission equipment, fiber electronics, business communication systems, and other auxiliary equipment. This position is responsible for installation and maintenance of network infrastructure and circuits, as well as digital switch devices and cross‑connects. It participates on project teams and may lead projects.
The Technician will install, maintain, and repair telecommunications products that TDS sells and leases (e.g., Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems), switching equipment, and complex PBX systems. Services include, but are not limited to, Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks.
Direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers is expected. The role requires proactive sales of TDS services and products, providing extraordinary customer service, identifying customer needs, and demonstrating TDS products. Products & services include Local Service, Central Office Services, Structured Cabling, MAC (Moves, Adds, and Changes), Voice Mail, Audio/Video Conferencing, and Non‑regulated CPE.
Support and on‑call requirements necessitate residing within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Monticello, Minnesota warehouse at 316 Pine Street, Monticello, MN 55362.
Responsibilities
Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products for new and existing customers.
Configure, maintain, and repair PBX, Key Systems, Centrex Systems, business systems, fiber terminals, POTS, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, and DS3s (carriers, paging & wireless). Locate and repair buried, aerial, and customer cable using test equipment.
Perform pole climbing and operate construction equipment; locate and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage; keep an orderly log of all locate requests.
Maintain central office equipment including switches, operating software, and auxiliary equipment. Back up switches, voicemail, fiber optic terminals, etc., and provide documentation and functional support.
Provide advanced troubleshooting support and respond to dispatches.
Maintain record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements).
Provide excellent customer service, proactively educating and selling TDS products and services.
Perform project management for installation of systems as requested by the supervisor.
Qualifications Required Qualifications
2+ years technical telecommunications experience OR current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
1+ year of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing, repair, installation, or switch training.
Valid driver’s license.
Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.
Other Qualifications
Background check required by the customer.
Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities; occasional travel; willingness to work overtime.
Pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum.
Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW >10,000 lbs.
Understanding of telecommunications products and services (e.g., wiring, fiber, cabling, PBX, VoIP).
Computer application skills: databases, dispatch systems, record systems, MS Office.
Independent work and decision making with minimal supervision.
Customer service and sales skills with strong verbal and written communication.
Organizational and multitasking abilities.
Physical ability to operate heavy construction machinery (bucket truck, backhoe) and lift up to 100 lbs.
Willingly work various/swing shifts as needed.
Operate vehicles with manual transmission.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Regularly sit, stand, write, operate a computer keyboard, standard office equipment and telephone. Frequently communicate with customers. Move, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Balance or climb. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Works outdoors, may be exposed to extreme weather and mechanical parts. Vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, focus.
