Heavy Equipment Mechanic – Aurora, CO
The position is only open to Colorado state residents. New employees will be paid biweekly (26 periods per year).
About the Position CDOT is hiring a Heavy Equipment Mechanic who will work out of the Aurora shop and travel throughout the Metro Denver area to provide skilled, professional, quality maintenance for various CDOT equipment.
Base pay ranges from $2,441 to $2,622 biweekly ($63,480 to $68,172 annually). An additional $1,000 monthly housing stipend is available, bringing total pay to $75,480 to $80,172 annually.
Work schedule: 4–day week (0600–1630) May–September; 5–day week (0800–1630) October–April.
Responsibilities
Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment malfunctions on all major systems.
Overhaul and rebuild components and equipment.
Use test equipment to diagnose defects or malfunctions.
Work on vehicles and equipment such as 3.5‑ton single‑axle, 10‑ton tandem‑axle tractor‑trailers, front‑end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15‑ft mower tractors.
Perform preventive maintenance and annual safety inspections.
Design and fabricate parts and special tools.
Order and procure parts and supplies.
Use computers to track vehicle repairs.
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
Primarily in equipment shop; occasional field work.
Required to respond to emergencies outside regular hours, work overtime including weekends and holidays.
Some on‑call time required.
Must provide a reachable phone number for emergencies.
Must lift up to 70 lbs; bend, kneel, climb in/out of trucks.
Must operate CDOT vehicles.
May be required to travel to remote locations.
Must read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions.
Must be physically able to work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and elevations up to 12,000 ft.
Exposure to loud noises; fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc.
Exposure to high voltage (>600V) and electrical shock.
Must hear and communicate via cell phone and state radio.
Must use computers for everyday duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of experience in automotive AND heavy equipment repair or education in automotive or diesel equipment mechanics (must provide transcript).
At least one year of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment such as 10‑ton double‑axle snowplows, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines or 15‑ft mower tractors.
Conditions of Employment
Current valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air‑brake restrictions in Colorado.
Pass pre‑employment screening including SSN trace, criminal records, public court records, educational records, and driving records.
Some on‑call and shift work may be required.
May need to pass substance abuse test, DOT physical.
Must be able to respond to emergencies outside regular hours, work overtime, weekends, holidays.
Must be physically able to perform essential job duties.
Essential Services Designation – required to report without delay for essential or emergency services.
Must attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora; veteran CDOT employees attend one week per year.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated success with duties listed above.
Years of State service related to position duties.
Extensive experience with troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of automotive and heavy‑diesel vehicles up to 10 tons.
MASE or ASE certifications in diesel engine, drive trains, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical/electronic systems, heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning.
Effective interpersonal and customer service skills.
Self‑starter; motivated to accomplish tasks.
Can work independently and in a team.
Attention to technical detail and accuracy.
Commitment to safety.
Knowledge of using computers for vehicle diagnosing, data input, record keeping, and email; quick to learn other software.
