Job Type Full-time

Description To work on heavy highway, road and bridge construction and maintenance projects, monitoring contractors, ensuring quality control and contract. Construction Inspector will be working under the direction of a Senior Construction Inspector, Construction Manager or another designee.

Requirements Essential Functions

Performance of Material Testing and Inspections or overseeing third‑party material testing.

Taking field measurements.

Read and interpret plans and contract documents for structures, bridges, roadways, etc.

Inspect various aspects of work and project installation to ensure proper construction.

Document pay quantities for current and final estimates.

Complete daily summary of construction activities and work performed.

Daily interaction with contractors; work with superintendent and foreman.

Advise contractors of violations; recommend adjustments; report status to senior inspector or construction manager.

Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.

Inspect erosion and sediment control installations for environmental compliance.

Inspect BMP installations and roadway traffic control for work‑zone safety.

Maintain project records: daily diaries, materials notebooks, as‑built plans, pay quantity records, and monthly estimates.

Monitor DBE documentation and compliance with federal labor requirements for federal‑aid construction projects.

Work Environment This job is performed in a professional office environment and/or transportation construction job sites. The role routinely uses field and standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, tablets, digital cameras, nuclear gauges, surveying tools, and other field-testing equipment.

Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, drive, lift items, and use hands and arms while talking or hearing.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work Full‑time, typically 40 or more hours per week. Day shifts usually start between 6:00–9:00 a.m. Project assignments may require night or weekend work and flexibility to meet client or contractor schedules.

Travel Most assignments do not require more than an hour of travel to and from job sites; however, some assignments may require extensive regional travel each day and occasional overnight stays for sites more than 90 miles away.

Required Education and Experience

Three (3) years of highway construction inspection experience.

Knowledge of roadway, structure and bridge construction/maintenance/repair/rehabilitation methods, materials, standards and specifications.

Familiarity with VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual, and Inspector Manual.

Knowledge of VA Manual on MUTCD and state/federal environmental, safety and Equal Employment Opportunity guidelines.

Proficiency with contract management software including Site Manager, PlanGrid and/or AWP.

Strong mathematics skills (algebra, geometry, trigonometry).

Soil and Aggregate Compaction (VDOT or NICET Level II)

Asphalt Field Level I & II (VDOT)

American Concrete Institute (ACI)

Pavement Marking (VDOT)

Slurry Surfacing (VDOT)

Surface Treatment (VDOT)

Flagger Certification (VDOT)

Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection (Virginia DEQ)

Nuclear Gauge Safety Training (NRC)

Stormwater Management (Inspector) (Virginia DEQ)

Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control (VDOT)

10‑Hour OSHA Safety Training (OSHA)

GRIT (Guardrail Certification) (VDOT)

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Proficiency with computer equipment and field inspection software (Site Manager, PlanGrid, AWP).

Functional use of Microsoft Office Suite.

Read and interpret roadway, structure, and bridge plans and specifications.

Apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles for field adjustments.

Maintain detailed records.

Perform and document required materials testing.

Communicate with client and contractor personnel and the public.

Work authorization/safety clearance (if applicable).

Eligibility to work in the U.S. and pass a background check if required.
