Heavy Truck/Equipment Mechanic at Yellowstone Club
The Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana seeks a full‑time, year‑round Heavy Truck/Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair a diverse fleet of light and heavy trucks, snowplows, and specialized road repair equipment. The role requires diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing major systems, fabricating parts, and ensuring safe, reliable equipment operation.
Responsibilities
Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment malfunctions on all major systems: engines, brakes, transmissions, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, GPS, and liquid de‑icing systems.
Utilize test equipment to identify component defects or malfunctions.
Work on a variety of equipment: single‑axle and tandem‑axle tractors, bulldozers, front‑end loaders, excavators, motor graders, wheel loaders, skid steers, 4X4 trucks, snowblowers, and small tractors with attachments.
Perform system rebuild, overhaul, and repair operations.
Order and procure parts, supplies, and materials to maintain equipment functionality.
Design and fabricate mounting brackets, special tooling, and unique parts or tools using machining, arc welding, oxygen‑acetylene cutting, plasma cutting, MIG, and ARC welding.
Fabricate, modify, and install special equipment or replacement parts using welders, torch sets, plasma cutters, and metal cutting saws.
Perform routine maintenance checks, inspections, and adjustments: fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, clutches; change filters and oil; lubricate equipment.
Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
Complete annual DOT safety inspections on the vehicle fleet.
Instruct operators in the use and care of vehicles and equipment.
Keep tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Two years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including at least one year of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment (10‑ton double axle trucks, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, excavators, wheel loaders, and tractors).
Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a pre‑employment screening and controlled substance test.
Strong knowledge of heavy equipment systems and troubleshooting techniques.
Experience designing and fabricating parts and special tools for unique or emergency situations.
Medium/Heavy truck ASE certifications in diesel engine, drive trains, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical/electronic systems, heating, ventilation, and A/C is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
Five or more years of experience in heavy equipment repair.
Demonstrated success with the duties listed above.
Highest work/personal ethics and integrity.
Extensive experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing automotive and heavy‑duty diesel vehicles and equipment up to 10 tons.
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and safety commitment.
Effective interpersonal, oral communication, and customer service skills.
Self‑starter, motivated, and organized in maintaining the shop and completing assigned duties.
Ability to quickly learn with minimal direction and adapt to changes in work assignments and environments.
Work Environment
Primarily shop work with field duties during emergencies and overtime, including weekends and holidays.
On‑call time and lift up to 70 lbs required.
Operate Yellowstone Club vehicles and equipment and read and follow oral and written instructions.
Work in extreme temperatures, loud noises, fumes, odors, and dust, with cell phone and radio communication for field calls.
Use computers to accomplish everyday duties and keep own tools and equipment.
Conditions of Employment
Current valid driver’s license and pre‑employment screening.
Require response to emergencies outside regular work hours with overtime, weekends, and holidays.
Provide emergency telephone number for supervisor.
