Job Overview Shimmick is seeking a highly talented

Senior Construction Engineer

to be based out of

Chattanooga, TN . This challenging position will support installation and commissioning of the culvert valves, miter gates, and associated hydraulics related to the lock chamber on the Chickamauga Dam Project; a new 110‑foot by 600‑foot lock located downstream of Chickamauga Dam.

Responsibilities

Field Engineering & Project Execution

Provide technical support to field crews, ensuring accurate interpretation of drawings, specifications, and contract requirements.

Oversee layout, surveying, and grade control to maintain project accuracy.

Assist in structural concrete placement, earthwork, marine construction, or underground utilities, depending on the project scope.

Monitor subcontractor activities to ensure compliance with project specifications.

Help manage and implement construction methodologies and best practices in collaboration with the superintendent and project team.

Quality Control & Safety Compliance

Conduct field inspections to ensure work meets Shimmick’s quality standards and project specifications.

Work with the Quality Control team to document and resolve non‑conformances.

Assist in safety audits and enforce compliance with OSHA and Shimmick safety policies.

Promote a safety‑first culture by proactively identifying and mitigating potential hazards.

Scheduling & Cost Management

Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining project schedules using Primavera P6 or equivalent software.

Track material quantities, labor hours, and equipment utilization to support cost control efforts.

Identify and help resolve potential project delays or budget overruns.

Coordinate with procurement teams to ensure timely delivery of materials.

Communication & Coordination

Work closely with project managers, superintendents, foremen, and design teams to facilitate smooth execution.

Prepare and track RFIs (Requests for Information), submittals, daily reports, and as‑built documentation.

Participate in weekly construction meetings to discuss project progress and challenges.

Serve as a liaison between the field and office, ensuring seamless communication and issue resolution.

Technology & Documentation

Utilize construction management software such as Procore, Bluebeam, or HCSS for tracking project data.

Support the implementation of BIM, GPS surveying, and drone technology for enhanced project accuracy.

Maintain organized field records and documentation for closeout and future reference.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

2+ years heavy mechanical installations experience.

Strong understanding of construction contracts.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Army Corps of Engineers projects.

Proficiency in AutoCAD, Primavera P6, Procore, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, means, and materials.

Ability to interpret plans, specs, and technical documents, as well as present to clients in the field.

Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards.

Effective leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.

Ability to work in outdoor and high‑paced field environments.

Salary & Benefits The salary range for this position is $135,000 – $145,000 per year depending on experience and/or education.
