Overview
Position: Construction Inspector The Construction Inspector is responsible for providing full-time, on-site inspection and documentation of airfield construction and rehabilitation projects. This role ensures that all construction activities comply with contract documents, FAA standards, safety regulations, and airport operational requirements. The Inspector plays a critical part in maintaining project quality, safety, and efficiency by monitoring contractor performance, verifying materials and workmanship, and documenting all field activities. The position requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and coordination with engineers, contractors, and airport operations. Key Responsibilities
Field Inspection & Compliance Inspect airfield construction work, including grading, paving, lighting, drainage, and utility installations, to ensure conformance with approved drawings, specifications, and FAA standards. Monitor contractor activities for adherence to the project’s Construction Safety and Phasing Plan (CSPP) and airport safety protocols. Verify compliance with FAA Advisory Circulars (especially AC 150/5370-10 and AC 150/5300 series). Observe material placement and testing activities, including asphalt, concrete, base course, and soil compaction. Confirm that proper construction methods and materials are used in accordance with approved submittals. Quality Assurance & Documentation Record daily construction activities, quantities, weather conditions, and equipment used in detailed daily inspection reports. Measure and verify construction quantities for payment purposes. Document deficiencies, non-conforming work, and corrective actions taken. Maintain photo documentation and as-built records throughout construction. Review test results, certifications, and quality control reports for accuracy and completeness. Coordination & Communication Coordinate daily with the Engineer and contractor field staff. Communicate field observations, issues, and recommended solutions to project leadership. Support coordination with airport operations and safety personnel to maintain uninterrupted and safe airfield operations. Attend construction and safety meetings to discuss progress, issues, and phasing. Safety & Environmental Compliance Monitor jobsite safety and ensure contractor adherence to airport and OSHA safety requirements. Report unsafe practices, incidents, or near-misses immediately to supervisors. Ensure environmental protection measures and stormwater controls are correctly implemented. Project Closeout Support Participate in punch list inspections and project acceptance activities. Assist in verifying final quantities and as-built drawings. Support completion of closeout documentation for FAA and airport records. Qualifications
Education & Experience Associates or Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. Minimum 2 years of construction inspection experience in airfield, transportation, or heavy civil projects. Experience on FAA-funded airport projects strongly preferred. Certification as an ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I. Technical Skills Solid understanding of FAA Advisory Circulars, specifications, and airfield construction methods. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and shop drawings. Familiarity with materials testing procedures and field quality control practices. Knowledge of geotechnical material properties and soil classifications. Proficiency with inspection and documentation software (e.g., Appia, Procore, e-Builder, FieldBook, MS Excel). Knowledge of airport lighting, electrical, and NAVAID systems is a plus. Other Requirements Excellent attention to detail, communication, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work night shifts, weekends, and irregular hours as required by airfield construction phasing. Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain airport security clearance (SIDA badge). Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and active airfield environments. Working Conditions
Primarily field-based at active airfield construction sites. Exposure to outdoor weather, construction noise, dust, and operational aircraft areas.
