Summary The Senior Tool Design Engineer leads the design and development of specialized tooling systems for manufacturing operations. Provides technical expertise in punch press stamping tooling including progressive and compound dies, cold heading and nut forming processes using stainless steel and alloy steel materials, various assembly and light forming tooling applications, and various secondary machining operations. Coordinates tool design activities while ensuring optimal performance, cost-effectiveness, and adherence to quality standards and production requirements. Responsible for maintaining organized tooling drawing systems and documentation control.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Tool Design & Development

Design and develop progressive and compound stamping dies for punch press operations

Create tooling solutions for cold heading and nut forming processes using stainless steel and alloy steel materials

Develop various assembly and light forming tooling to support manufacturing operations

Design tooling for various secondary machining operations

Technical Leadership

Coordinate tool design team activities and project timelines

Review and approve tool designs for compliance with specifications and safety standards

Provide technical guidance on complex tooling challenges and design optimization

Drawing Management & Documentation Systems

Establish and maintain organized tooling drawing filing systems and database management

Implement standardized drawing numbering and revision control procedures

Ensure proper archival and retrieval systems for tooling documentation and historical records

Coordinate drawing release processes and maintain drawing accuracy and currency

Oversee digital file management and backup procedures for all tooling drawings

Process Optimization

Analyze manufacturing processes to identify tooling improvement opportunities

Collaborate with production teams to optimize tool performance and efficiency

Implement cost reduction initiatives through improved tool design and material selection

Project Management

Manage multiple tool design projects simultaneously from concept to completion

Coordinate with vendors and suppliers for tooling components and materials

Ensure project deliverables meet timeline and budget requirements

Quality Assurance

Establish and maintain tool design standards and best practices

Conduct design reviews and validation testing for new tooling systems

Troubleshoot tooling issues and implement corrective actions

Documentation & Communication

Prepare detailed tool design drawings using CAD software applications

Create and maintain tooling documentation, specifications, and procedures

Interface with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams on tooling requirements

Maintain organized drawing libraries with proper version control and accessibility

Continuous Improvement

Stay current with industry trends and emerging tooling technologies

Participate in lean manufacturing initiatives and waste reduction programs

Mentor and develop tool design team members

Technical Skills - Expert knowledge of punch press tooling, progressive and compound die design, cold heading processes, assembly tooling applications, and various secondary machining operations

Essential Job Requirements Skills And Abilities Education and/or Experience

Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Tool & Die Making, or related field minimum

7-10 years of hands‑on experience in tool design with emphasis on:

Punch press stamping tooling (progressive and compound dies)

Cold heading and nut forming processes with stainless steel and alloy steel

Assembly and light forming tooling development

Various secondary machining operations

Drawing organization and documentation management systems

Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)

Knowledge of metallurgy and material properties for tool steels and workpiece materials

Understanding of manufacturing processes and production requirements

Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)

Proficiency in drawing management systems and database organization

Language Skills Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation. Ability to write clear technical reports and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.

Mathematical Skills Ability to perform calculations related to tool design, material stress analysis, and geometric relationships. Understanding of statistical process control principles.

Computer Skills Advanced proficiency in CAD/CAM software, Microsoft Office Suite, manufacturing planning systems, and drawing management databases.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Evidence of "US person" required under ITAR regulations

Professional engineering certification preferred but not required
