for this position is typically between $2,478-$2,610 biweekly ($64,428-$67,848 annually). There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year. The minimum annualized hourly rate for this position is $30.98/hour (corresponding to $2,478 biweekly). About CDOT

This Journey level Equipment Mechanic position inspects, diagnoses, troubleshoots, modifies, and repairs light and heavy trucks and specialized snow, ice, and road repair equipment to preserve the fleet in safe operating condition, following DOT and CDOT policies. Diagnoses, services and repairs systems found on heavy equipment, including transmissions, brakes, electrical, ignition, fuel, hydraulic systems. Vehicles and equipment include snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, large trucks, snow blowers, and mower tractors. Major duties and responsibilities
include, but are not limited to: Diagnoses problems, disassembles units, inspects components, analyzes failures, replaces or repairs parts, and reassembles units in brakes, drive, electrical, hydraulic, air, steering and suspension systems; engines; computer controlled sanders and de-icing systems; and AVL systems. Performs preventive maintenance: routine checks, inspections and adjustments of fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changing filters and oil; lubricating; tuning engines; servicing valves and fuel filters; checking fuel pressures; adjusting injector heights and governors. Maintains service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Completes annual DOT safety inspections on the vehicle fleet and certifies vehicles for 49 CFR 396 DOT compliance. Completes preventive maintenance work orders. Diagnoses equipment components for defects using a range of test equipment, scan tools and diagnostic computers. Visually inspects equipment for defects or leaks; test drives vehicles and equipment. Fabricates, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts; designs and fabricates parts and tools for unique or emergency needs; machine, weld and cut as needed. Sets up and installs new equipment per CDOT specifications; maintains records on all units and tracks maintenance and inspections; keeps DOT inspection records; orders spares and materials; work orders in SAP; prepares material estimates. Work with safety as a priority; maintain knowledge of safety procedures, policies, and manuals; participate in safety trainings and meetings; continue learning through on-the-job training and courses. Other duties as assigned. Work Environment
Summer hours: Mon-Thu 6:30–5:00; Winter hours: Mon-Fri 8:00–4:30. Approximately 40% field work and 60% shop work. Respond to emergencies outside regular hours; overtime including weekends and holidays; possible on-call time. May be required to work different shifts in emergency situations; provide a reachable phone number for emergencies. Physical requirements: lift up to 70 lbs; climb in/out of trucks; operate CDOT vehicles; read and follow instructions; frequent travel for field repairs and trainings; exposure to extreme temperatures, loud noises, fumes, dusts, and chemicals; potential high voltage exposure; use computers for diagnostics and records. Minimum Qualifications
Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including at least one year diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment such as 10-ton plows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, and mower tractors, with journey level proficiency. Or completion of an apprenticeship program or higher education in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics; substitutions are on a year-for-year basis. Unofficial transcripts or certificates are required if substituting. Conditions of Employment Must have a valid Colorado CDL Class A or B with no restrictions on air brakes as a condition of employment. Pre-employment screening may include background checks and driving records; may require drug testing and a DOT physical. Essential Services Designation: required to report to provide essential services during emergencies. New employees attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora; veteran employees attend one week per year in Aurora. Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays. Preferred Qualifications
Experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic with demonstrated abilities listed in the description; current CDL Class A or B with no air brake restriction; extensive experience troubleshooting and repairing automotive and heavy-duty diesel vehicles; experience designing/fabricating parts and tools; ASE certifications are preferred; strong communication, safety, and problem-solving skills; ability to learn software and use computers for diagnostics and record keeping.
