Responsibilities WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time
Assistant Vice President, Tunnel Engineer
for our
New York, NY Location . This person will be expected to help lead projects with our National Geotechnical Team and be a part of a growing organization that thrives on exceeding our client’s needs.
Provides subject matter technical support and leadership for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, improvement, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in the public and private sector. Responsibilities include the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of facilities, roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, canals, levees, bridges, water supply systems, underground storage, and sewage treatment. Provides situational guidance to PMs and managers that address current and future challenges, and that documentation and recommendations accurately account for and address risk, innovation, and future-ready opportunities. Provides leadership with ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
Responsibilities – Continued
Manage all phases of major complex underground and tunneling projects, from feasibility to conceptual engineering and preliminary engineering through final design and construction.
Communicate with clients, respond to clients' requests, and attend design and progress meetings.
Coordinate technical aspects with client counterpart and teaming partners for work within the discipline on complex underground and tunneling projects.
Coordinate with other disciplines and clients and attend design and progress meetings.
Lead engineering analysis for the design of tunnels in soft ground, mixed conditions, and rock using various tunnel construction methods such as TBM, drill and blast, sequential excavation method SEM, including temporary/initial support and final lining. Apply rock and soil mechanics skills to evaluate various failure modes and develop ground support schemes.
Interpret geotechnical and geological data, characterize ground classifications and derive engineering parameters.
Develop geotechnical design reports/memos and Contract Documents including drawings and specifications.
Supervise and provide guidance to junior engineers.
Who You Are Required Qualifications
Minimum M.S. degree in Geotechnical/Tunneling Engineering.
Minimum 10+ years of relevant experience in tunnel design and construction.
US PE registration (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
Proven experience in design and construction of underground and tunneling projects, including both soft ground and rock tunnels.
Proven experience in developing Contract Documents for underground and tunneling projects.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Proven experience in managing technical staff to deliver quality work.
Must be a team player.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering.
40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.

Compensation Compensation: Expected Salary (all locations): $115,000 - $205,000
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
