The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a vacancy for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the Durango location. This position works primarily in a shop and occasionally in the field and provides skilled, professional, quality mechanic services for a wide range of CDOT equipment. Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment malfunctions on all major systems. Overhaul and rebuild components and equipment. Use test equipment to diagnose defects or malfunctions. Work on vehicles and equipment such as 3.5-ton single axle and 10-ton tandem axle, tractor-trailers, front end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, and 15' mower tractors. Perform preventative maintenance and annual safety inspections. Design and fabricate parts and tools as needed. Order and procure parts and supplies. Use computers to track vehicle repairs. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment. Other job duties as assigned. Why CDOT?

Expected schedule: 4 days of 10 hours, Mon-Thu 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shop-based with some field work; respond to emergencies outside regular hours and may include overtime, weekends, and holidays. Some on-call time; must provide a contact number for emergencies. Physical requirements include lifting up to 70 lbs, bending, kneeling, climbing in/out of trucks, and operating CDOT vehicles. May travel to remote locations for equipment repair. Ability to read, understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions. Frequent travel during the workday for field repairs and trainings. Adverse conditions: extreme temperatures, varying elevations up to 12,000 feet, loud noises, and exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dust, etc. Exposure to high voltage (over 600V) and electrical shock; must be able to communicate via phone and state radio; computer use required. A combination of four years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair AND/OR education in automotive or diesel equipment mechanics. (Must provide copy of transcript if using education.) At least one of the four years must include diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment (e.g., 10-ton snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, 15' mower tractors). Conditions of Employment

Must pass pre-employment screening including background checks and driving records. Must possess a current, valid regular driver’s license. Must obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes within 6 months of hire. If you have a non-Colorado CDL, you must be eligible to drive in Colorado with your CDL at time of hire; if you relocate from outside Colorado, you must transfer your CDL to Colorado within 30 days. Some on-call and shift work may be required. May be required to pass a drug test and a DOT physical. Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays. Must be physically able to perform essential job duties. Essential Services Designation – required to report without delay to provide essential services. New employees must attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora; veterans attend one week per year in Aurora. Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated success with the listed duties. State service experience related to the duties of this position. High ethics and integrity; extensive experience with troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of automotive and heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment (up to 10 tons desirable). ASE certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and A/C is preferred. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills; self-starter capable of working independently and in teams; attention to technical detail and safety. Ability to use computers for diagnosing, data input, record keeping, email, and learning other software quickly. Applicant Checklist
