EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Perform highly skilled maintenance and construction work requiring application of trade skills, codes and standard trade practices. Train and supervise a group of inmates assigned to heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration tasks. Ensure compliance with standard trade practices and codes on air systems used in heating, ventilating, and refrigeration. Troubleshoot and perform work in operation, repair and installation of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems which may use Freon chilled water for air cooling means and air or water for condenser means. Install or repair electric or pneumatic controls for equipment. Determine required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas. Use and interpret a psychometric chart; utilize diagnostic equipment to control and measure air flow, room air changes and room pressurization. Operate and maintain building and energy management systems; perform preventative maintenance tasks; maintain custody and discipline and evaluate performance of each inmate assigned to work areas. Determine and obtain required materials; maintain records; operate heavy equipment as necessary; may perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs. May physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances, and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies; may be required to operate a motor vehicle; perform related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade. Knowledge of hazardous material regulations; knowledge of computer based heating and cooling systems. Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills. Ability to operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems; plan, layout and schedule maintenance assignments; maintain records and prepare reports; read schematics and flow charts; instruct inmates or other employees in the techniques and skills used in the trade; perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations; supervisory ability. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade. NOTE: Based on an individual’s technical experience, the length of credited service will be determined at the discretion of facility management. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the highly skilled level. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Graduation from a vocational or technical school in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience. Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year-for-year basis. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with repair and operation of commercial HVAC, refrigeration equipment and associated controls. Valid S1 (Unlimited Heating, Piping, and Cooling Contractor), S2 (Unlimited Heating, Piping, and Cooling Journeyperson), D1 (Limited Warm Air, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Contractor), or D2 (Limited Warm Air, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Journeyperson) license. Experience with computer-Building Management Systems and Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Excel. CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class. A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment. WORKING CONDITIONS
