Responsibilities
The specialized machinist / tool maker works independently and with limited supervision, performing diversified and specialized machining operations. Areas of machine specialization include performing intricate machining operations and setup of conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools vertical milling machines, lathes and other shop equipment.
Areas of operational specialization include tool and fixture fabrication, production rework and other machining activities. The tooling requirements are developed by interpreting drawings, and engaging design engineers, manufacturing engineers, and other tool makers to determine the best solution.
Performs duties to layout, build, and repair a variety of jigs, fixtures, production parts, and similar devices.
Use a wide range of calipers, micrometers, verniers, comparators, and other precision measuring instruments to maintain close tolerances.
Able to function from work orders, complex drawings, sketches, and sample parts, written and verbal instructions.
Have good problem-solving skills and be mechanically inclined.
Arrange machining schedules to meet internal customer needs.
Troubleshoot existing tooling and repair as required.
May occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds.
Use safety standards as a guideline to maintain a clean and orderly work area.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Education & Experience
GED/HS Diploma or Toolmaker Experience, Technical School Diploma or Formal Machinist Training (preferred).
Minimum of 7+ years of experience in machining of different metals and some plastics.
