We are looking for Construction Inspectors of all levels including Engineering Technician 1 Trainee (ET -1) and Transportation Technicians TT-1 to TT-5 to join our growing team. We have immediate openings statewide in North Carolina for qualified transportation and heavy civil Construction Inspectors on NCDOT, locality and Design-Build projects. The Inspector is responsible for managing and performing daily construction management and inspection services for various types of NCDOT and locality transportation projects. Must have experience in roadway/bridge construction, have NCDOT certifications, be proficient at reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and shop drawings, and oversee construction document controls and contract compliance.
Responsibilities
Construction management
Perform field inspection of Contractor's operations to ensure compliance with contract documents
Prepare daily and weekly reports on work accomplished by Contractor
Perform materials testing and maintain testing logs
Review periodic pay estimates for accuracy with Contractor
Prepare sketches and assemble data for Engineer's use in making changes to the project
Maintain diaries and reports on work accomplished and noted deficiencies
Perform sophisticated, complicated mathematical calculations
Review Contractor schedules including initial CPM and monthly updates
Communicate effectively with the Engineer, Owner and Owner's staff, and maintain rapport with the project team throughout construction
Requirements Inspector TT-1 through TT-5: Minimum of one (1) year of specific horizontal transportation field construction inspection experience in the specified areas.
Engineering Technician Trainee (ET-1): Minimum of zero (0) years’ experience; any construction experience, plan reading, mapping, contractor, or related educational experience is preferred.
High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate. Bachelor’s Degree or other advanced certificate desirable
Demonstrated inspection and management experience with roadway and bridge construction, utility construction, and related pavement rehabilitation projects
Experience coordinating inspection duties with multiple crews
Experience tracking daily quantities, completing daily inspection reports, performing monthly estimates and as-built drawings
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Good communication skills
Ability to read/interpret plans and specifications
Writing and drawing skills for inspection reports and documentation
Basic computer skills (Word & Excel) desirable
Willingness to work nights and overtime when required

Construction Inspector candidates are preferred to possess eight (8) self-study courses required for the NCDOT Engineering Technician (ET) 1 Trainee Program for Private Engineering Firms. Completion provides further understanding of terminology, standards, and inspection overview on NCDOT construction projects.
The following summarizes the self-study courses for ET 1 Trainee Program:
Tier 1: Safety; Construction Mathematics; Highway Plan Reading; Basic Highway Inspection; Beginning Construction Stakeout; Basic Highway Engineering I
Tier 2: Basic Highway Engineering II; Structure Inspection
Physical Requirements (Essential Functions) This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field. Duties may include:
Walking across rough or uneven terrain
Moving around active project sites, including climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps
Bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing
Staying in a stationary position for extended periods
Repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and fingers
Lifting or carting up to 50 pounds and distances up to 50 yards
Driving to project sites (possible long distances)
Ability to work safely in potentially hazardous environments
The work environment may include exposure to varying temperatures, precipitation, and outdoor conditions. Work may be performed in noisy or confined spaces.
