Job Description and Duties Under the supervision of the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, lead direction of Caltrans Highway Maintenance Lead Worker or other qualified crew member. The Caltrans Equipment Operator I operates, maintains, and repairs various maintenance and landscape equipment, performs miscellaneous labor duties in conjunction with maintenance and repair of State highways, and works with the rest of a crew in the performance of these activities. A valid, unrestricted Class B driver’s license with Tank endorsement (N) is required while performing duties associated with maintaining the State highway system. When not operating the specified equipment, may perform any of the duties outlined under Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker or Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker. The incumbent works individually or with a crew and may occasionally oversee a less experienced coworker. Incumbent may be required to work overtime including weekends/holidays if needed, may be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts, and is expected to respond to emergency calls. The position may require out-of-town travel, usually in week‑long increments. This position is represented under collective bargaining.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the CALTRANS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.

Special Requirements

Position requires a drug screening to be passed prior to hiring.

Position requires a valid unrestricted Class B commercial driver’s license, with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.

Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
