Public Works Service Worker I City of Minneapolis

Job Summary As a Public Works Service Worker I, you will perform non‑skilled and skilled manual labor and drive trucks and equipment to support Public Works Department construction and maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities

Perform numerous construction and maintenance tasks for a number of Public Works functions, including removal, replacement or placement of infrastructure such as pipe, conduit, maintenance holes, curb and gutter, concrete, asphalt, etc.

Load, unload and secure materials and equipment from trucks using manual methods or loading equipment.

Drive trucks and construction equipment including skid‑steer loaders, pup‑rollers, toilers, solid waste collection trucks, sweepers, jet trucks, vacuum trucks and other assigned vehicles.

Conduct routine inspections, minor and major repairs, and cleaning activities in sanitary and storm infrastructure such as pipes, tunnels, maintenance holes, grit chambers.

Assist with the maintenance of streets and alleys; shoveeld dirt and snow, mow grass and trim brush.

Assist with the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, street markings, parking meter supports and collars.

Set up barricades for parades, detours and maintenance operations.

Repair and maintain guardrails, bridges and related equipment.

Perform excavation, placement and replacement of infrastructure at or below grade.

Collect and transport solid waste, recycling, yard waste and special items, sorting materials for appropriate drop off sites.

Measure, calculate and record quantities of materials used or work performed.

Prepare and apply mixes such as sand, cement, sealant, deicing chemicals.

Operate winches, pumps, hoists, heavy power tools (e.g., jack‑hammer, concrete saw) and other mechanical equipment.

Required Qualifications

Minimum age 18 years by Sunday, December 14, 2025.

High school diploma, GED or equivalent.

At least one year of experience performing manual labor in a similar environment, including operation of construction equipment.

Commercial Driver’s License (Class B or better) with no air brake restrictions; Tanker Endorsement required for some assignments.

Proof of a current, valid CDL at the time of the Workplace Simulation Test and at the time of hire.

Other Requirements

Background check.

Pre‑employment medical exam and drug/alcohol test, with ongoing random drug testing for CDL holders.

Assignments in solid waste may require driving 50% time with loading and unloading 50% time.

Work nights, weekend shifts and/or holidays.

Working Conditions Exposure to all kinds of weather, dirt, dust, odors, chemicals, vermin, high noise levels, heavy traffic, and possible raw sewage. Frequent standing, walking, pushing/pulling, bending, twisting, lifting up to 100 pounds, operating in confined spaces, climbing ladders, stairs and platforms.
