The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) currently has a portfolio of capital projects valued at $35B, and another $13.6B projected over the next 10-year commitment plan. The projects BEDC implements allows DEP as a whole to continue to operate and maintain an exemplary water supply system.

Our Water System Capital Program (WSCP) oversees planning, design, construction management, and construction to support the upgrading and state of good repair of the Bureau of Water Supply’s critical infrastructure. BEDC delivers a substantial multibillion dollar capital program as required to provide for new infrastructure as well as the reconstruction of existing assets to ensure the integrity, continuity, and high quality of the water supply. This work spans the DEP’s vast network of wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, shafts, reservoirs, tunnels, pumping stations, ultraviolet disinfection system, filtration systems, and associated facilities throughout New York City and its watershed.

Responsibilities

Assist in supervising water and wastewater system projects within the watershed, including dams, aqueducts, wastewater treatment plants, bridges, roadways or other miscellaneous infrastructure projects.

Plan, coordinate and direct the implementation of the design and construction of projects in the NYC watershed.

Monitor permit requirements and assist in resolving project issues.

Conduct reliable and skilled field condition surveys and prepare accurate reports on physical observation under direct supervision.

Review contract documents, codes and regulations and compare them to project requirements to identify deficiencies.

Participate in field investigations to develop alternative approaches and solutions to meet project objectives.

Work with the construction management team to perform inspections of construction activity.

Attend required environmental compliance and safety related training classes.

May be required to work extended days from time to time; field work may involve standing and walking on uneven surfaces, steep slopes, stairs, in all weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in chemical engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering work, or

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in chemical engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering work, or

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a master’s degree from an accredited college in chemical engineering.
