Position Overview
The Material Engineer will support Department of Defense (DoD) initiatives within the Fort Belvoir area by performing advanced materials research, evaluation, and supply chain assurance activities. This role requires strong analytical and technical skills in materials engineering, with emphasis on ensuring performance, safety, and reliability of materials used in military systems and end-item production. The position blends on-site collaboration with government and contractor teams and remote analytical work, supporting a fast-paced environment focused on innovation and compliance within the Defense Industrial Base (DIB).
Primary Responsibilities
Conduct material characterization and testing to verify conformance with technical data packages and military specifications.
Analyze raw material certifications and related documentation to ensure compliance with ISO/EN 10204 standards, AMPP guidelines, and other applicable regulations.
Identify and mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities that could impact end-item processing or mission-critical manufacturing operations.
Support lifecycle material analysis, including selection, design, degradation assessment, and performance validation for metals, composites, polymers, and ceramics.
Collaborate with program management, manufacturing, and logistics teams to recommend materials and processes aligned with safety, performance, and sustainability goals.
Prepare technical documentation, analysis reports, and engineering justifications for review by government technical leads.
Utilize data analysis tools to evaluate failure trends, corrosion rates, and quality deviations in defense-related components and assemblies.
Advise on the design and implementation of process controls that enhance materials reliability and production efficiency.
Required Qualifications
Active Secret clearance (or ability to obtain and maintain).
Level II Information Assurance Certification.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited university in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Minimum 2 years of professional experience in materials engineering, supply chain assurance, or manufacturing support within the DoD or Defense Industrial Base (DIB).
Demonstrated proficiency in materials characterization, testing, and certification review.
Preferred Qualifications
Coursework or certification with the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) or ISO/EN 10204 standards.
Familiarity with Raw Material Certifications and defense-specific quality assurance protocols.
Experience analyzing composite, metal, ceramic, and polymer systems used in advanced defense applications.
Working knowledge of material data systems and quality control methodologies related to the manufacturing supply chain.
