Department Overview GSE Underwriting is responsible for pre‑screening and underwriting all Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans.

Impact You Will Have This position reports to the Deputy Chief Underwriter and serves as a senior member of the Underwriting Management Team.

Primary Responsibilities

Demonstrate an understanding of the history and function of Fannie Mae, Fannie Mae DUS, DUS Lenders, Freddie Mac and Freddie Mac Program Plus.

Manage, oversee, train and develop members of the underwriting team and the underwriting process.

Structure, underwrite, monitor, and perform due diligence for multifamily housing products and transactions.

Evaluate and manage risk issues using a comprehensive risk management approach.

Develop and manage critical business relationships, cultivating favorable relationships with internal and external contacts.

Anticipate and resolve issues for customers and team members.

Demonstrate mastery of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae methodology for building up Proforma income and expenses.

A high level of computer proficiency is required in Excel and Word.

Maintain mastery of the Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae Guides and periodic updates on an ongoing basis to cultivate continuous improvement.

Conduct site visits to assess the condition and quality of multifamily projects, their management, and their marketplaces.

Review third‑party Appraisals, Engineering Reports, Seismic Reports, Phase I Environmental Assessments and Operations and Maintenance (O & M) Reports to assist the underwriting teams.

Ensure underwriting staff generates accurate and analytical narratives for submission to the Loan Committee.

Work with Asset Management, Production, Closing and others to closely monitor performance and develop benchmarks and metrics for portfolio evaluation.

Work closely with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae team members on resolving deal‑specific issues in a timely manner.

Frequent business travel required.

Communicate and problem‑solve daily with teammates, clients, vendors, and other stakeholders, often in combination with travel.

Other skills related to building a career in Underwriting.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Attendance is generally required from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm local time, Tuesday through Thursday, with the option to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

7+ years of work experience in commercial real‑estate finance with strong exposure to multifamily and extensive knowledge of the Fannie Mae DUS program required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in underwriting, including key industry players, trends, and risk analysis.

Demonstrated leadership with at least five years of direct supervisory responsibility.

Analytical skills to evaluate data quickly and make decisions based on imperfect data.

Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills, communicating effectively with all management levels.

Commitment to innovation, change, and initiative.

Ability to develop and execute solutions to complex issues and transactions.

Extensive multifamily experience across a wide range of financial and product executions.

Business management experience and leadership in closing deals.

Knowledge of Fannie Mae’s DUS and Freddie Mac’s Program Plus products required.

Ownership mindset, willingness to take on challenges, and patience when learning new processes.

Courtesy, respect, and thoughtfulness in working with colleagues and stakeholders.

This position has an estimated base salary of $115,000 – $175,000 plus discretionary bonus. An employment offer is based on the applicant’s relevant work experience, applicable knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
