Electrical Inspector – City of Boise Join the City of Boise as an Electrical Inspector and play a vital role in keeping our community safe. What You’ll Need Idaho Electrical Journey-level License and four years of experience as a practicing journey-level electrician. Obtain Electrical Inspector certification (IAEI or ICC) within six months of hire; City can assist.

Essential Functions

Inspect new and existing electrical wiring and installations in buildings and structures of any size or height to determine that installations conform to approved plans and applicable national electrical codes and City of Boise ordinance.

Verify that electrical equipment has the appropriate labeling and listings for the application.

Perform on-site reviews of electrical plans and diagrams.

Perform limited erosion and sediment control inspections.

Handle moderately complex issues and problems and refer more complex issues to higher-level staff.

Write correction notices and require corrections of deficiencies discovered in electrical wiring and installations.

Monitor the inspection area for work performed without permits, proper occupancy approval or dangerous conditions.

Issue notices of violation, including stop-work orders, where unsafe or illegal conditions exist.

Perform inspections of permitted work to verify progress on projects with little documented activity.

Coordinate power termination due to severe code and life safety violations with local utilities, supervisor and planning and development services staff members.

Verify the proper licensing of electrical contractors and journey-level workers.

Respond to complaints from tenants, homeowners and others about possible substandard housing conditions due to electrical code violations.

Advise electrical contractors and homeowners on various installation problems relating to electrical codes.

Provide information on the electrical code and other related regulatory requirements.

Meet regularly with other electrical inspectors to develop policies and procedures to ensure uniformity of inspection.

Coordinate activities with other departments and inspection staff by recording inspection results in the city's database.

Work with other inspectors to coordinate inspection coverage of the city and ensure that electrical work is inspected and approved before issuing a certificate of occupancy, completion or other final approval.

Demonstrate continuous efforts to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality, seamless customer service.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.

Four years of experience as a practicing journey-level electrician licensed in the State of Idaho.

Within 6 months of hire, pass electrical inspector certifications for residential and commercial installations offered by the Independent Alliance of the Electrical Industry (IAEI) or the International Code Council (ICC).

Valid state-issued driver's license.

Applicants must be able to pass the City of Boise background check processes which include a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation.

Driving Record Check.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training Prior experience as a certified Electrical Inspector certified by the Independent Alliance of the Electrical Industry (IAEI) or the International Code Council (ICC).

Knowledge Of

The methods and practices involved in constructing, installing, maintaining and operating a variety of residential, commercial and industrial electrical installations and appliances.

The National Electric Code and local ordinances.

International Code Council electrical inspection certification.

Computer usage, including related software.

General customer service techniques.

Ability To

Detect and locate defective electrical wiring in construction and ascertain the state of construction and installation.

Read, understand and apply construction and wiring blueprints, specifications, drawings and diagrams.

Check and calibrate electrical test instruments.

Deal constructively with conflict and communicate effectively with people who are angry, frustrated or confused.

Exercise technical judgment based on trade and technical experience.

Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance.

Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds; also frequently pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds.

The noise level is occasionally moderate.

Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch; includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Employee will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance; position requires hand/finger dexterity.

Work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, wet and humid conditions, dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter.

Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, work in/at heights and confined spaces, and will also drive a vehicle as part of this position.

Construction sites at all stages of completion, heavy equipment, falling hazards, open excavation and temporary safety installations.
