About the Job Residence Director

The Residence Director is responsible for providing leadership, management, and direction for a comprehensive residential education program for one residence hall and/or apartment community housing between 400-900 students. The role implements the department's residential curriculum on belonging for residents, focusing on Community, Identity, and Empowerment & Support. It develops and maintains an inclusive residential learning environment that promotes overall student development and supports the academic mission of the University. The Director manages educational, administrative, and operational functions, collaborates with a building management team, and reports directly to a Coordinator of Residential Life.

Responsibilities 40% Residential Education/Residential Programs

Develop and implement a comprehensive student development program reflecting the residential curriculum.

Develop and execute lesson plans to facilitate student learning.

Plan and coordinate academic and identity related services and programs in collaboration with Living Learning Community partners.

Oversee and administer the student conduct system and serve as a residential system hearing officer with authority up to contract termination.

Coordinate on-site and front-line response to incidents, including complex cases such as sexual misconduct, substance misuse, mental health concerns, bias incidents, and community conflict.

Provide direction and leadership for student engagement and leadership initiatives within the residential community.

Assist in leadership of residential life committees focused on educational initiatives.

Assist with development of the residential life strategic plan, annual work plan, and provide input for the 10‑Year Capital Plan.

Review student satisfaction survey results and determine strategies to address concerns.

Center the needs and experiences of students facing identity‑based barriers and provide support, space, and advocacy.

35% Supervision

Supervise, train, and evaluate either 1 Assistant Residence Director or 1 Community & Engagement Intern, depending on the position.

Participate in the selection, supervision, training, and evaluation of 12‑26 Community Advisors.

Lead the development and facilitation of weekly staff meetings and intentional one‑on‑one meetings.

Assist with training of student staff within housing operations, facilities, and event services.

Develop and implement strategies to recruit, retain, and support a diverse staff.

Serve as a resource on University and departmental policies and procedures.

20% Residential Life Operations

Oversee, monitor, and implement safety initiatives for a safe physical and psychological environment.

Manage and monitor the residential community's student and staff engagement budget ($175,000‑$235,000).

Serve as a member of the building management team to address building needs.

Monitor custodial/maintenance functions, dining operations, and information desk/business office areas.

Provide oversight to the building communication strategy across multiple platforms.

Serve as the 24/7 on‑call professional staff person for crisis response to incidents involving students.

Assist in overseeing the Business Office, 24/7 Information Desk, security monitor program, occupancy, summer conferences, and conduct processes.

Provide leadership for special projects as assigned.

Maintain an inviting office space and updated community displays.

5% Outreach

Collaborate with staff from other University departments to provide learning, services, and support programs for residents.

Collaborate with University Dining Services to support a high quality residential dining program.

Participate in recruitment and marketing activities with the Admissions Office and represent Housing & Residential Life at recruiting events.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in college student personnel, education, psychology, leadership, or a closely related field; or BA/BS degree plus at least five years of relevant experience.

Knowledge of housing operations on a college campus.

Two years of housing or student affairs related leadership experience.

Significant knowledge, background, and experience working with people of all backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated commitment to the educational potential of residence life.

Skills in communication/public speaking, organization/planning, and administration.

Previous experience supervising residential life student staff.

Pay and Benefits Pay Range:

$48,713.60 + 2 bedroom apartment and a meal plan
