Senior Portfolio Accountant (Real Estate)

About the Role This position reports to the Manager, Portfolio Accounting and assists with day-to-day operations for multiple portfolio structures. The Senior Portfolio Accountant works closely with the Portfolio Accounting team and other departments to ensure accurate, timely financial reporting, cash management, and compliance.
Key Job Duties
Perform full-cycle accounting duties for assigned portfolios, including closing books for portfolio entities and ensuring accuracy of journal entries, reconciliations, and consolidations.
Prepare and review monthly account reconciliations for balance sheet and income statement accounts and resolve discrepancies.
Analyze portfolio revenues, expenses and cash flows; prepare variance analysis and provide insights to management.
Facilitate and complete monthly close procedures and ensure timely preparation of financial reporting packages.
Prepare quarterly fair value financial statements, footnotes and internal reporting deliverables; assist with investor reporting.
Prepare portfolio-level transactions (acquisitions, dispositions, debt activity, joint venture activity) and ensure appropriate accounting treatment.
Manage capital activity including contributions, distributions and capital reconciliations.
Monitor portfolio cash balances, prepare wire payments and coordinate transfers to ensure liquidity needs are met.
Assist with audits and tax return preparation by providing supporting documentation and coordinating with external auditors and tax preparers.
Support budgeting and reforecasting process, including preparation of supporting schedules and analysis.
Assist with quarterly performance calculations and ad hoc investor or internal reporting requests.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (operations, finance, investor relations) and third‑party service providers to ensure accuracy and timeliness of reporting.
Identify opportunities for process improvement and support implementation of policies, controls and documentation enhancements.
Provide excellent customer service to internal stakeholders and external investors.
Education and Experience Required
Bachelor’s degree required; accounting/finance majors and CPA preferred.
Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, experience in real estate investment management or fund accounting strongly preferred.
Experience with consolidations, financial reporting and fair value accounting strongly preferred.
MRI or equivalent enterprise accounting systems experience required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office; MRI accounting software or equivalent experience with enterprise accounting systems.
Excellent communication (written & verbal), organization, problem solving and project management skills. Motivated self‑starter with strong team leadership skills, high sense of urgency and aptitude to think independently.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to forge effective working relationships throughout accounting team and organization.
Ability to multi‑task, with attention to detail and an ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Compensation Starting base salary range: $85,000 to $95,000 annually (USD). Eligible for merit‑based annual bonus program and benefit package.
