Position Summary The Director of Transportation is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all aspects of the district’s student transportation services. This includes managing vendor contracts, supervising departmental staff, and administering the transportation budget to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient service delivery. The role supports daily instructional programs, student activities, and specialized transportation needs through strategic coordination and operational leadership. The Director ensures compliance with district policies and regulatory requirements, promotes consistent service standards, and leads the department in providing responsive support to students, families, staff, and the community. Additionally, the position is accountable for evaluating incidents, resolving service issues, and recommending improvements to enhance safety, efficiency, and overall performance.

What You’ll Be Doing (Responsibilities)

Lead the planning, coordination, and oversight of district-wide student transportation services, ensuring safe, reliable, efficient, and equitable access for all student populations.

Liaison vendor relationships to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and sustain reliable and safe student transportation.

Use transportation data and performance metrics and stakeholder feedback to evaluate service effectiveness, proactively identifying and resolving service disruptions and/or delays.

Direct investigations into transportation-related incidents and complaints, applying corrective actions and continuous improvement strategies.

Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., Exceptional Education, Athletics, Homeless Services) to align transportation services with programmatic and student-specific needs.

Monitor and manage transportation budgets, procurement processes, and funding applications to ensure fiscal responsibility and regulatory compliance.

Promote and ensure strong customer service practices across transportation operations, delivering responsive support to students, families, school staff, and the broader community.

Ensures and maintains accurate reporting and documentation per state and federal compliance, including District compliance audits and DESE guidelines.

Perform other duties as assigned in support of district operations.

To Be Successful at This Job (Qualifications)

Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in a job related field, Master Degree in business or transportation management is preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience

Eight (8) years of experience in student transportation services

Experience leading others in student transportation services

Intermediate level Microsoft Office Skills, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Valid driver’s license

Physical Demands This job requires that the employee be able to: sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, fingers, and reach with hands and fingers; bend, stoop, and lift objects of at least ten pounds. Job requires the employee occasionally to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Visual ability requires mono and color vision, close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Terms Of Employment Length of work year: 12 months, 7.5 hours per day/ 5 days per week; 260 work days
