Mechanical Design Engineer III – (COPV) Lunar Permanence, Core Components
At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit and focuses on developing the Blue Moon landers and related products. You will work directly with NASA and national partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program to develop the Lunar Transportation system that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond Earth.
Responsibilities
Create architecture and detailed designs for COPV systems.
Develop CAD models, detailed drawings, and manufacturing processes for composites and pressure vessels.
Develop and execute test plans for COPV qualification and acceptance, including performing tests and analyzing data.
Partner with third‑party vendors for COPV design, manufacturing, and analysis and manage these relationships.
Support integration of COPV on vehicles and collaborate with propulsion, structures, and manufacturing disciplines.
Conduct research and analysis to identify and implement design improvements for future vehicles and applications.
Minimum Qualifications
B.S. degree in engineering.
5+ years of experience with automotive, aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicle structures.
U.S. citizen, permanent resident (Green Card holder), refugee or granted asylum status required.
Strong mechanical design and integration skills using ProEngineer Wildfire 4, Creo Parametric, NX, and/or Catia.
Structural design of metallic and composite components and assemblies.
Material selection, compatibility and manufacturing techniques.
GD&T analysis experience (ASME Y14.5).
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Technical writing experience for reporting requirements and test plans.
Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
8+ years of aerospace or space experience.
Experience on aerospace or space development programs.
Pressure vessel design for high pressures.
Experience with composite filament winding.
Experience managing vendors for COPV architecture for launch vehicles.
Experience with human spaceflight.
Compensation Range (By State)
CA: $117,498.00 – $164,497.20
CO: $107,707.00 – $150,789.45
WA: $117,498.00 – $164,497.20
