New York State Department of Taxation and Finance invites applications for the Auditor 1 (Tax) / Auditor Trainee 1 (Tax) / Auditor Trainee 2 (Tax) (NY HELPS) role.
Pay Range Base pay: $53,764.00 / yr – $66,951.00 / yr.
Minimum Qualifications
Auditor Trainee 1 (Tax):
Bachelor’s degree with 24 credits in accounting/auditing/taxation; OR Bachelor’s degree with 18 credit hours in accounting/auditing/taxation and 6 credits in finance, money and banking, economics, or business.
Auditor Trainee 2 (Tax):
Meets the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications and 1 year of experience; OR meets the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications and a Master’s with 15 credits in accounting/auditing/taxation.
Auditor 1 (Tax):
Meets the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications and 2 years of experience; OR meets the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications and a CPA license in NYS; OR meets the Trainee 1 minimum qualifications and a Master’s with 15 credits in accounting/auditing/taxation and 1 year of experience.
* Experience must be gained in any one or combination of the following categories: As an accountant/auditor with responsibility for the full range of professional activities involved in the review, analysis, and management of accounting systems; As an internal accountant/auditor with responsibility for conducting a full range of financial accounting/auditing activities; As an accountant with ongoing responsibility for the design, implementation, and review of accounting systems; As a professional staff member of a private accounting practice with broad experience in maintaining accounting books and records, completing financial statements, and preparing business and personal tax returns; As a field auditor with a federal, state, or municipal agency, with the responsibility for performing comprehensive field audits; As an accountant/auditor principally engaged in the analysis and/or interpretation of tax law.
Duties
Conduct audits and examinations of taxpayer’s books and records to determine compliance with NYS Tax Law.
Develop and maintain working knowledge of the Tax Law, Criminal Tax and Penal Law, and departmental procedures, including ethics and confidentiality rules.
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with supervisors, department staff, taxpayers, and prosecutor offices.
Use computer technology including laptop computers, PCs, and relevant software.
Travel frequently, including local and overnight travel within and outside New York State, and perform field work during non‑business hours if necessary.
Carry computer equipment and case materials to audit sites, training classes, and conferences.
Prepare cases for prosecution and assist prosecuting authorities.
Represent the department and advocate disputed cases at conferences and hearings; testify in grand jury and trial courts.
Conduct interviews of witnesses, taxpayers, or subjects under investigation with an investigative team.
Perform various special assignments and miscellaneous tasks as requested.
Adhere to the department's time and attendance rules and regulations.
Additional Comments Having a valid NYS license may be a condition of employment in this title, based on location. Work hours, travel, and telecommuting options will be discussed during interview.
The salary range reflects levels from Trainee 1 to Auditor 1, contingent on qualifications.
Location pay is also available.
