Job Overview The Philanthropic and Foundation Grant Advisor plays a key role in advancing the mission of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) by cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding relationships with individual donors and foundations to generate and grow major and planned gifts. This position oversees a portfolio of high-value prospects, manages foundation grant activity, and develops tailored strategies to achieve revenue goals. Success in this role requires strong relationship-building, strategic thinking, and exceptional communication skills.
Essential Functions Manage a portfolio of approximately 100-150 individual donors, foundations, and qualified prospects. Lead the foundation grant program, including identifying opportunities, writing proposals, managing submissions, and stewarding awarded grants. Collaborate with the Corporate Giving team and Charitable Service Trust to support joint funding initiatives and shared grant opportunities. Personally solicit major and planned gifts through face-to-face and virtual visits, providing customized proposals and donor materials. Implement and manage all phases of the donor lifecycle, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Conduct a minimum of 80–100 personal visits per calendar year to maintain and deepen donor relationships. Track activity and progress through internal CRM systems, maintaining timely and accurate records of interactions and outcomes. Monitor quarterly and annual activity to ensure fundraising and engagement goals are met. Collaborate with the Gift Planning team on blended giving opportunities, charitable gift annuities, and documentation of bequest intentions. Achieve a minimum of $1M in major gift and grant revenue by year three. Maintain consistent and meaningful contact with donors through proactive outreach and stewardship efforts. Demonstrate creativity and initiative in developing new funding opportunities and strengthening existing relationships. Participate in professional development workshops and conferences to remain current on trends in philanthropy and donor engagement. Perform other related duties as assigned by management
Essential Skills and Experience Minimum of five years of experience in major gift fundraising, foundation relations, or donor relationship management. Proven success in securing gifts of $25,000 or more from individuals or foundations. Strong organizational, strategic planning, and relationship management skills. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation abilities, including grant writing experience. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and CRM or donor management software. Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Knowledge of charitable gift planning vehicles and blended giving strategies. Experience working in a national nonprofit or veteran-focused organization. General understanding of business procedures, financial reporting, and data management. Valid driver’s license.
Degree of Supervision There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position.
Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical Demands:Job requires sitting up to eight hours a day and standing four to six hours a day.Body movement primarily in hand and arm functions associated with normal office activities.Hand and eye coordination, and hand dexterity is required for handwriting and keyboarding over prolonged periods of time.Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires occasional lifting and/or carrying of no more than 25 pounds, and bending, squatting, pushing and pulling. Frequent vehicle travel for personal visits with donors and prospects is required. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Work Environment:The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
