Position Summary The Police Officer I works to fulfill our mission and the University’s mission through training, education, community engagement, active patrol of University properties, crime investigation, identification and resolution of safety/security hazards and problems, assistance to students, staff, faculty and visitors, and handling of accidents and emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Current P.O.S.T certification OR eligibility to apply for Colorado P.O.S.T. certification.
One year of experience as a certified Police Officer with a P.O.S.T recognized agency OR a combination of experience and education equivalent to one year of experience (30 Credits = 1 year), with official or unofficial transcripts attached.
At least 21 years of age and possess a valid Colorado Driver License.
No felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, or disqualifying driving record issues listed under "Must Have NO".
Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s or higher level degree from an accredited college or university.
Two or more years of law enforcement experience as a POST certified police officer.
Strong verbal communication and customer service skills.
Leadership experience, and interpersonal skills for building relationships.
Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills in emergency situations.
Volunteer experience with the community.
Direct state service experience.
Essential Job Duties
Patrol campus property, parking lots, and buildings on foot, by bicycle and vehicle.
Identify safety/security hazards and suspicious persons/situations and resolve them, proactively engage in community interactions.
Provide education and assistance to the community via presentations; offer assistance to students, faculty, staff, visitors, motorists, and others.
Build positive relationships with campus constituents and community members.
Manage traffic safety and special event management through vehicle, bicycle, and radar patrol.
Apprehend, warn, prosecute, and educate offenders; investigate accidents and complaints.
Determine appropriate level of force when necessary; investigate crimes and suspicious circumstances; interview witnesses and suspects.
Maintain records through reports and summons/warrant applications.
Serve as officer in charge in absence of supervisor.
Testify at trials, motor vehicle and disciplinary hearings as needed.
Coordinate information with judges, attorneys and other agencies.
