The City of Chesapeake’s City Attorney’s Office is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Legal Secretary II to provide essential clerical and administrative support to our legal team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, values accuracy, and takes pride in keeping operations running smoothly. Every day offers something different—from preparing legal documents and managing case files to coordinating schedules and supporting attorneys who serve our community.
What You’ll Do
Prepare and process a variety of legal documents, including motions, orders, summonses, resolutions, ordinances, and contracts.
Enter and update case information in the City’s legal database with confidentiality and accuracy.
Create, organize, and maintain case files, correspondence, and other records.
Answer calls and greet visitors, providing information or connecting them with the appropriate attorney or staff member.
Process accounts payable and enter requisitions into the City’s financial system.
Coordinate court assignments, meetings, appointments, and travel arrangements; maintain shared calendars.
Deliver legal documents to courts and track all incoming and outgoing materials.
Monitor and maintain office supply inventory; restock as needed.
Perform general office tasks, such as filing, copying, faxing, and scanning documents into the imaging system.
Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT : Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in legal secretarial skills or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : In addition to satisfying the vocational / education standard, this class requires a minimum of two years of full‑time experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with .
Special Requirement Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and / or City‑wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in legal field is preferred.
