Under direction, performs a variety of basic law enforcement activities to prevent crime, maintain law and order, and identify and apprehend suspects. The majority of positions in this class are assigned to the patrol division, with others assigned to investigation, community and youth services, and administration. All may be called upon at any time to respond to a major crime scene or other law enforcement priority outside their regular assignment. Performs related responsibilities as required. Distinguishing Characteristics

Patrols an assigned area for the prevention of crime and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and arrests violators as necessary. Responds to radio dispatch, telephone instructions, and/or citizen requests to scenes of disorder or crime as assigned. Conducts preliminary or follow-up investigations of crimes and disturbances, including burglaries, thefts, robberies, narcotics action, deaths, assaults, and accidents. Makes traffic stops and detains suspicious persons; issues citations; makes arrests; appears in court and gives testimony as arresting officer; transports prisoners. Assists in the investigation of traffic accidents and crimes; secures crime scenes; interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects; and identifies, collects, and preserves evidence. Assists the public; may provide medical assistance or stabilize situations pending the arrival of medical professionals; answers questions; directs traffic; maintains knowledge of and refers those in need to public service agencies. Conducts building and field searches; checks doors or windows for building security. May participate in or be assigned to crime prevention, community relations, investigations, or school resource-type programs, communications, or records; may serve as a desk officer; may perform courier services in the delivery of materials, supplies, or equipment. Writes reports and field notes; may participate in departmental studies; participates in staff development; attends briefings and training sessions; maintains patrol vehicle, firearms, and other related assigned equipment. May participate in public education programs and make presentations regarding traffic safety and a variety of crime prevention topics; may serve as Department representative to other public agencies, task forces, or committees. Any equivalent combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities would normally be obtained by: Entry Level: ACADEMY GRADUATE

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; Academy graduate or must be enrolled in a CA Basic POST Police Academy and successfully graduate within 180 days.; Basic Academy certification elapses under the following circumstances:

Three years break in service as a California Peace Officer/Level I Reserve Officer; Three years since Basic Academy graduation and employment as a California Peace Officer/Level I Reserve Officer has not occurred. (If this applies, a re-qualification course certificate is required.)

Must be at least 21 years of age by time of appointment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license by time of appointment. LATERAL

Twelve months or more of experience and active status as a sworn California Peace Officer; Possession of, or ability to, obtain a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment. Or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities. Knowledge of

Current civil and criminal laws; principles of civil rights and scope of law enforcement officer authority; procedures for processing and preserving crime scenes and evidence; interview and interrogation techniques; techniques to control situations and/or people; procedures for searching detainees; what constitutes contraband; techniques for control of detainees; where contraband is typically hidden; current statutes; department policies and procedures; legal terminology used in law enforcement; first aid techniques and procedures of personal safety; defense and restraint tactics; procedure for initial response to hazardous materials incident; local geography and referral agencies; court procedures. Special Requirement

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver’s License. Must be at least 21 years of age by time of appointment. Candidates other than promotional applicants must pass a police background investigation. Incumbent must possess or be able to obtain the POST Basic Certificate within eighteen (18) months of hire.
