Position Summary Harnett County EMS is seeking eager Paramedics. An employee in this position performs paramedic-level life support, stabilization procedures, transport, and emergency medical care for Harnett County Emergency Medical Services. Duties include responding to emergency and non‑emergency calls, providing advanced‑level life support at the scene and during transport, ensuring quality care standards, and making sound judgment and treatment decisions.
Duties And Responsibilities
Serve as paramedic in charge on calls; direct care, rescue, and response of fire, crime, accident, or other emergency and non‑emergency victims/patients; oversee work of assigned EMTs or AEMTs; provide training and mentoring of new employees; and supervise students assigned to ride.
Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls in an ambulance or quick response vehicle.
Be able to drive and operate a vehicle as needed.
Perform emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols established by the Department and the County’s Medical Director.
Administer medications, including controlled substances via intravenous line or other routes; administer specified solutions by intravenous infusion; perform pulmonary ventilations; and obtain EKGs for cardiac diagnostics.
Perform patient assessment and life support techniques in accordance with approved protocols including airway management, CPR, oxygen administration, hemorrhage control, shock treatment, bandages, dressings, splints, burns treatment, childbirth assistance, and other procedures within County protocols.
Sign chain‑of‑custody forms for narcotics from off‑going crew; maintain them until end of shift or transfer of custody.
Gather patient medical and insurance information and input into the computer.
Transport patients to local and regional medical facilities, maintain contact with medical staff during transport, assure care of patient, and oversee treatment and care for long‑term care patients on transport.
Complete full patient care documentation in various paper and electronic formats during and after calls for service, including billing and legal documentation.
Participate in continuous training programs to maintain certification and improve competence in medical technical work and operation.
Study county street, road patterns, and networks to improve future response runs.
Inspect and test response vehicles and emergency equipment; maintain inventory; clean and sanitize equipment daily; ensure proper working order; make routine adjustments; report defects.
Maintain cleanliness and perform minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities.
Assist members of volunteer emergency medical service organizations as requested.
Assist with direction and control during disaster situations.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
No experience required, but experience as an EMT or AEMT is desirable.
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Possession of a current Paramedic Certification from the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services.
Possession of other applicable certifications such as BLS, PALS, ACLS, ITLS, PHTLS, EVD, EVOC and HazMat; and desirable possession of ICSS 100, 200, 700, 800.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques, maintenance of rescue equipment, anatomy and physiology, intravenous therapy, equipment used in emergency care, county geography, OSHA and bloodborne pathogens, emergency patient care standards, and established operating guidelines.
Skills in recognizing trauma, communicating effectively, operating rescue equipment, recognizing adverse conditions, maintaining vehicles, equipment, and facilities, and maintaining confidentiality.
Abilities to respond quickly and calmly, drive ambulances safely, articulate verbally and in writing, manage death and dying patients, accurately record services, work with co‑workers and the public, apply short‑term relief, render timely care, make sound judgments, maintain privileges, and comply with medical oversight.
Physical Demands Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force, balance, climb, crawl, crouch, grasp, and handle repetitive motion, speak, stand, stoop, and walk. Requires visual acuity for reading, operating medical equipment, inspecting patients, and performing medical procedures.
Work Environment Exposure to normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including human body fluids, infectious diseases, extreme temperatures, noise, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils, and high risk of blood exposure. Requirements comply with OSHA bloodborne pathogen regulations.
