Mohave County Public Works – Equipment Maintenance/Fleet Services Division
Location: 3715 Sunshine Drive, Kingman, AZ
Position: Automotive Mechanic Senior Salary: Step 15 (Steps 1‑6) $23.26 – $26.97/hr
Mission To maintain and repair all County vehicles and equipment to OEM standards or better; to provide safe and reliable transportation to all Mohave County divisions and personnel that require the vehicles and/or equipment.
Responsibilities
Monday – Friday, 6:00am–3:00pm (may require on‑call status, overtime, weekends, holidays)
Must pass drug screen post‑offer
Travel within county; work at various locations including out‑of‑town and remote areas
Perform automotive diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, rebuild and overhaul of engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, and related components
Operate road‑test equipment and diagnose vehicle malfunctions
Install, diagnose, maintain, repair or rebuild emergency equipment on Sheriff Department related vehicles
Assist other mechanics, provide guidance and instruction
Provide functional supervision, prioritize and schedule work, evaluate repair work performed by subordinate personnel
Perform automotive body work as required
Perform preventive maintenance (oil changes, tune‑ups, filter changes, belt and tire checks) in accordance with service manuals
Create work orders, maintain daily records of work performed, materials used and hours worked
Design, install and maintain simple electrical circuits when necessary
Fabricate parts, hoses and tools as needed
Maintain adequate supply of materials, equipment and tools for work assignments
Clean, maintain and service required equipment and tools
Working Conditions
Exposure to varying weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, wind, and rain
Manual labor outdoors, including standing, walking, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, bending, and using confined spaces
Use and safe operation of hand and power tools in cramped and contorted positions
Exposure to exhaust fumes, chemical fumes, acid, oil, grease, hazardous materials, and loud noises
Require frequent lifting of 25 lbs up to 50 lbs or more while operating equipment
Minimum Education, Experience, and Training
High School Diploma or GED
Five (5) years successful experience in automotive maintenance and repair as a mechanic or related field
Experience with automotive major repair including overhauls of engines and related components
Experience with emergency response equipment installation and maintenance
Proficiency in diagnostic, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical and electrical problems
Ability to communicate professionally with public, co‑workers, and staff
Strong knowledge of automotive systems: transmissions, clutches, suspension, brakes, carburetors, hydraulics, electrical systems, drive lines, steering, cooling, air conditioning
Experience in automotive body work and safety procedures
Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records and documentation
Follow written and oral instructions and guidelines from service manuals
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other County departments
Fulfill physical requirements, moderate lifting 20–50 lbs, perform work in cramped positions
