Sr. Database Engineer

ForeFlight . You will work on the Infrastructure & Operations team, managing a diverse database ecosystem across on‑premise, cloud, and hybrid environments. Your expertise will ensure high availability, performance, and security for our mission‑critical applications.
Key Responsibilities Database Management & Infrastructure
Design, implement, and maintain highly available, scalable, and secure database systems for mission‑critical applications across various environments (on‑premise, cloud, and hybrid).
Manage the full database lifecycle from initial design and setup through to maintenance, patching, upgrades, and eventual decommissioning.
Architect and implement robust backup and recovery strategies (including disaster recovery and business continuity plans) for all supported database platforms.
Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation related to database architecture, configuration, processes, and standards.
Collaborate closely with infrastructure teams on capacity planning, hardware/storage provisioning, and network configuration to optimize database performance and reliability.
Performance and Optimization
Proactively monitor database performance, identifying bottlenecks and implementing advanced performance tuning (e.g., query optimization, indexing strategies, instance configuration) to meet SLAs.
Conduct routine performance audits and health checks across the entire database estate.
Automate routine operational tasks such as monitoring, alerting, patching, and provisioning using scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) and configuration management tools.
Database Technologies
Demonstrate expert‑level proficiency in administering, troubleshooting, and supporting Oracle Database (including RAC, Data Guard, Golden Gate, ASM).
Demonstrate deep experience with PostgreSQL and its associated tools, replication, and high‑availability solutions.
Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server administration, including Always On Availability Groups, Distributed Availability Groups, SSIS, and SSRS.
Experience with other NoSQL and relational database technologies (e.g., MongoDB, MySQL, Cassandra) is highly desirable.
Operational Support & Security
Serve as an escalation point for complex database issues, providing 24/7 on‑call support on a rotational basis.
Enforce security policies and procedures, managing user access, roles, and privileges in compliance with internal and external audit requirements.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex production incidents, providing root cause analysis and implementing permanent fixes.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
7+ years of professional experience in database administration and engineering, specifically within an Infrastructure and Operations context.
Proven mastery of multiple database platforms, including Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.
Expertise in database security, performance tuning, and high availability configurations (e.g., clustering, replication, failover).
Strong experience with cloud‑based database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL, Google Cloud SQL).
Excellent scripting and automation skills (e.g., Shell, Python, PowerShell).
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
Relevant professional certifications (e.g., Oracle Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, PostgreSQL certification).
Experience with DevOps practices and tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, Docker).
Experience with database migration projects, including cross‑platform migrations.
Knowledge of monitoring tools like Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent.
