The Histology Technologist is responsible for performing advanced histological procedures, including embedding, sectioning, staining (routine and special), and preparing complex tissue specimens for diagnostic review by a Pathologist. This role involves independent operation of laboratory equipment, quality control, troubleshooting, and adhering to regulatory guidelines. The Histology Technologist serves as a resource for laboratory staff and is involved in quality assurance and advanced histological techniques. Essential Functions

Prepare, process, embed, section, and stain complex tissue specimens for diagnostic review by a Pathologist. Perform specialized histological techniques, including immunohistochemistry (IHC) and enzyme histochemistry. Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment such as microtomes, stainers, and cryostats. Assist with gross specimen preparation, frozen sections, and fine needle aspirations (FNAs) as required. Monitor and evaluate quality control measures, ensuring adherence to laboratory protocols and regulatory standards. Document all procedures and maintain accurate specimen data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Assist in the development and validation of new staining techniques and laboratory methods. Provide guidance and training to Histology Technicians and laboratory staff. Maintain a safe work environment by adhering to infection control and hazardous material handling protocols. Participate in continuing education to stay current with advancements in histotechnology. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

Advanced knowledge of histological techniques, including IHC and complex staining procedures. Proficiency in laboratory instrumentation operation and troubleshooting. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with laboratory staff and Pathologists. Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in specimen processing. Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment. Education

Associate’s degree in Histotechnology or related science field required. Bachelor’s degree in science or related field preferred. Graduation from a NAACLS‑accredited Histotechnology program preferred. Licenses/Certifications

ASCP certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) required. Meets CMS and applicable state regulatory requirements. Experience

Minimum of 2 years of histopathology laboratory experience with emphasis on complex tissue processing required. Experience in advanced staining techniques, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and troubleshooting laboratory equipment preferred.
