Live & Work Position Available at The Humane Chicken Hatchery Alchemist Farm Looking for a dynamic job with a sweet private living space? We are seeking a farm helper for a year commitment with potential for long-term extension if we are all a good fit. Position and housing available starting November 1st 2025 Living Space

A 120 sq ft lofted tiny house with a large private fenced yard and a 500 sq ft greenhouse, set up for veggie gardening with raised beds and irrigation. Rent for the living space is $800 and includes water and electricity. You will be in charge of trash service, internet and propane for your outdoor shower. Work and Schedule

Join us for a year of raising breeding groups of chickens and running a humane chicken hatchery. 3 days a week (Saturday/Sunday/Monday) you will be the first eyes on the birds in the morning and the last eyes on them at night with time for chick care. Starting January, your position will expand into preparation of our shipments on Mondays, followed by incubation, hatching and shipping of our baby chicks on Tuesday mornings. Evening hours after dark are available for tasks such as putting flocks away and ensuring coop doors have closed; living on the farm is preferred for ease. Yearly workload expect 15+ hours/week (Nov–Jan) and 30+ hours/week (Jan–Oct). During hatching season, Tuesday is a longer day for preparing shipments and post-hatch cleanup; other days offer more flexible daytime hours. Starting pay is $18 per hour, with opportunities for more hours in property upkeep (mowing, weed whipping, irrigation repair, and general coop/farm infrastructure work). There are many learning opportunities available. Examples of solo work hours

Morning checks to ensure each coop door opens Sat/Sun/Mon collecting eggs and sorting from breeding groups Tucking birds in at night Training juvenile birds into coops at night Trimming wings in winter Sat/Sun/Mon checking chicks in brooders and refilling water and food Setting eggs in incubators and hatchers Weekly preparation of shipping boxes for chicks Weekly prep of chick pickup boxes Packing up hatching egg orders for shipment Weekly cleaning of hatchers and incubation space on Tuesdays after hatch Management of pasture watering/reseeding for flocks Random repairs of coops/upkeep (latches/hinges) Farm sitting for short periods during the year Examples of group work hours Packing up baby chicks on Tuesday mornings for shipment with our farm owner Franchesca Who we are looking for

Someone interested in experiencing a season of hatching baby chicks at a hatchery. We provide clear training on how the farm operates, and you will gain confidence in all aspects of our systems, including putting birds away at night and caring for juvenile birds. Things will be slower from November to January to help you land and integrate. In January, we begin preparing flocks for laying and breeding after hens’ winter break. As laying resumes in 2026, we will be saving eggs for incubation and entering the weekly rhythm of egg collection, setting, and hatching from February through October. Weekly check-ins will ensure you are up to date and prepared for shifting tasks. To thrive in this role, you should be a self-starter, enjoy working with animals, and be open to learning. Must be able to lift 50 lbs and have strong attention to detail. Must communicate clearly and be willing to ask questions while being trained. Job is 4 days a week with Wed-Fri off (or a different combination that can be arranged). Vacations can be worked into the year with sufficient planning and notice. Hours are flexible outside of Tuesdays, which are our hatching/cleaning day; other hours should be consistent for the birds’ health. We are continually evolving our farm practices. Interest in soil health and regenerative agriculture is a plus but not required. Who we are

We are a small family farm team running a humane chicken hatchery in Northern Sebastopol. We operate 100% on solar power, are plastic-free in our shipping, and strive to be plastic-free and zero-waste in our operation. We enjoy inspiring and educating others on sustainable farming practices and humane animal care. We value clear communication and living on the farm with space to have a private life or join us for shared evenings by the outdoor fire. We cannot accommodate applicants with a dog due to the safety of the flocks. How to apply: email AlchemistFarm@gmail.com Looking forward to meeting you!
