Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics – Kovalski Lab Position Summary
The Kovalski Lab, affiliated with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, is recruiting a full‑time Research Technician. The lab focuses on a systems‑level approach to identify the functional molecular mechanisms of post‑transcriptional control in cancer, especially the selective translation of RNA to produce therapeutic targets. Responsibilities
The Research Technician will perform a variety of molecular biology techniques and support the lab’s research projects in RNA biology and cancer. Key duties include: Perform DNA extraction, PCR, plasmid preparation, basic cloning, flow cytometry, next‑generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation and analysis, gel electrophoresis, tissue culture, western blotting, RNA isolation, and quantitative PCR. Engage in scientific writing and data organization, maintain detailed record keeping and data entry, and actively participate in group meetings. Contribute to shared lab responsibilities such as reagent preparation, inventory maintenance, and safety compliance. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Previous coursework in molecular biology, genetics, or biochemistry. Independent laboratory experience outside of coursework. Experience (or in process of obtaining) with at least two of the following: mammalian cell culture, molecular cloning, protein biochemistry, mouse handling, or next‑generation sequencing and analysis. High motivation, passion for scientific research, and strong commitment to performing research. Effective communication, detail‑oriented, organized, and able to take initiative. Ability to work independently and collaborate within the lab. Maintain a complete and detailed laboratory notebook and archive label data for publication, proposals, and presentations. Strong prioritization skills, coordination of tasks, and meeting multiple deadlines. All requirements must be met by the start date. Experience in next‑generation sequencing and analysis, bioinformatics skills, RNA biology, and mouse handling. Proficiency in MS Office and Adobe software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Illustrator). Interests in gaining research experience to strengthen future graduate school applications. Special Physical/Mental Requirements
