Reporting: This position reports to the Missioner for Campus Ministry, who serves on behalf of the Canon for Congregational and Mission Vitality.
Summary The Episcopal Diocese of Texas seeks a visionary and relational Episcopal priest to serve as Campus Missioner at Texas Southern University (TSU)—a historically Black university in Houston—and to provide sacramental support to St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church, a lay‑led historic congregation. The primary focus of this position is engagement and ministry development at TSU, while also nurturing mutual ministry between TSU students and the St. Luke’s congregation. The Missioner will lead a ministry that forms disciples, nurtures spiritual growth, and builds bridges between TSU, St. Luke’s, and the wider community through worship, formation, service, and fellowship.
Primary Tasks
Campus Engagement and Discipleship
Serve as a visible, accessible, and welcoming Episcopal presence on the TSU campus.
Cultivate authentic relationships with students, faculty, and staff, focusing on discipleship, pastoral care, and spiritual growth.
Develop and lead regular opportunities for worship, Bible study, service, and fellowship that reflect and celebrate the gifts and culture of TSU’s predominantly Black student body.
Recruit, equip, and mentor a core group of student leaders for peer ministry and program leadership.
Parish Collaboration and Sacramental Ministry
Provide regular sacramental leadership (celebrant, preacher, or assisting priest) at St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church.
Collaborate with St. Luke’s lay leaders who provide pastoral care and handle the parish’s administrative and leadership responsibilities.
Support and encourage lay‑led ministries that strengthen the parish’s relationship with TSU and its surrounding neighborhood.
Honor and uplift the rich spiritual heritage and leadership of St. Luke’s as a historic Black congregation.
Program Development and Expansion
Oversee the administrative aspects of the Campus Mission at TSU, including planning, communications, and coordination of programs and events.
Establish and track clear metrics for growth in participation, leadership development, and community engagement.
Collaborate with diocesan leaders and partners to align programs with diocesan vision and resources.
Use innovative and adaptive strategies to respond to the evolving needs of both the campus and the parish.
Community Partnerships and Cultural Competence
Build partnerships with TSU organizations, local churches, and community groups.
Lead with cultural humility, celebrating and affirming the gifts and leadership of Black and multicultural communities.
Model ministry rooted in racial reconciliation, mutual respect, and the Gospel.
Accountability and Evaluation
Submit reports to the Missioner for Campus Ministry outlining participation, impact, and next steps.
Evaluate programs regularly using qualitative and quantitative data.
Participate in diocesan campus ministry gatherings, trainings, and retreats.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Episcopal priest in good standing (or eligible for licensing in the Diocese of Texas).
Demonstrated experience in campus ministry, young adult ministry, or congregational leadership.
Proven ability to grow ministries using metrics, adaptive strategies, and Spirit‑led creativity.
Strong cultural competence, particularly in historically Black and multicultural contexts.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship‑building skills.
Vibrant spiritual life rooted in the Gospel; spiritual maturity and authenticity.
Effective preaching and teaching abilities.
Deep understanding of Episcopal theology, liturgy, and identity.
Entrepreneurial, collaborative, and resilient leadership style.
Strong organizational and digital communication skills (social media proficiency expected).
Safe Church certification (training provided if not current).
Required Education & Experience
Master of Divinity (MDiv) or equivalent theological education (or experiential equivalent).
Minimum of two years of leadership experience in ministry.
Demonstrated ability to gather community and plant ministry.
Primary ministry presence on the TSU campus and within the St. Luke’s community.
Additional Information
Dedicated office space at St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church (adjacent to TSU campus).
Regular collaboration with TSU organizations, St. Luke’s lay leadership, and the Diocesan Campus Ministry network.
