$31.37/hr - $36.65/hr

Summary

The purpose of the position is to perform a wide range of work involving installing and recognizing the cause of faulty refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and making repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Certification Requirement: In accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, this position requires a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Certification. Applicants who do not meet this requirement are ineligible for further consideration. Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required — but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Screening: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element (usually the first question in the online questionnaire). Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Eligible candidates are then rated against the remaining job elements: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision, equipment assembly, installation, repair, interpret instructions and specifications (including blueprint reading), materials, technical practices, troubleshooting, use and maintain tools and equipment. Experience may include paid, unpaid, volunteer, or national service programs such as Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. Volunteer work that builds relevant competencies may receive credit as well.

Duties
  • Calculates airflow and pressure‑temperature characteristics for different systems.
  • Locates and repairs faulty equipment swiftly to minimize inoperative time.
  • Identifies trouble before dismantling and performs repairs that ensure proper functioning after assembly.
  • Conducts complex repairs such as installing and fitting connecting rods, crank shafts, piston rings, bearings, and bushings.
  • Overhauls valves by adjusting or replacing gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, valve fittings, seals, and couplings.
  • Aligns motors and flywheel drives.
  • Checks refrigeration cycles of commercial and industrial systems to locate and evaluate elements controlling low‑side and high‑side pressure.
  • Monitors temperature of cooling units and the temperatures of liquid and suction lines.
  • Records running time of various mechanisms.
  • Examines equipment components visually and audibly for potential leaks and performs prescribed test procedures.
  • Explores probable reasons for equipment failure and identifies faulty equipment causes.
  • Provides analysis of large systems encompassing heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating functions.
  • Applies knowledge of mechanical and vapor compression, absorption, and steam jet or air cycle methods of air conditioning.
  • Works Monday‑Friday 08:00 am – 04:00 pm.

Physical Requirements

The work requires carrying equipment, tools, and testing devices that seldom weigh over 50 pounds, most of which can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach parts such as fans, electrical and water lines, and ductwork. The incumbent must stoop, stretch, bend, kneel, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
