Senior Hardware Systems Engineer – Samsara

Base pay range: $165,750.00 – $224,500.00 per year.

About the Role

You will lead the electrical engineering aspects of product architecture and design, conducting feasibility, design, and cost studies for key component selection, thermals, antennas, and more. Working closely with customers, product management, firmware, PDM, EPM, NPI, and hardware leadership, you will help make trade‑off decisions and mentor other engineers.

Location: Hybrid – three days per week in our San Francisco, CA office; two days remote. Requires up to 25% travel and proximity to an international airport. Relocation assistance is provided. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Bay Area.

Responsibilities

• Ship high‑volume products at scale.
• Conduct research on the latest semiconductor capabilities.
• Architect system specifications and evaluate feature trade‑offs with product management and cross‑functional teams.
• Spearhead the development process from prototyping to field validation, meeting performance, cost, and schedule goals.
• Manage collaboration with JDM partners to design, validate, certify, and manufacture quality products.

Minimum Requirements

• 5+ years of experience shipping large‑volume hardware programs with ODM and JDM partners.
• Systems design expertise: chipset/SoC selection, power optimization, antennas/RF, batteries, sensors, PCB design, etc.
• Proven record navigating trade‑offs among design, manufacturability, schedule, and cost.
• Experience with diverse systems—automotive, indoor/outdoor industrial—with low‑power, wireless (LTE, BLE, WiFi, GPS), embedded AI/ML, imaging, sensors.
• Track record of system bring‑up/debug including desense, validation, and power.
• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
• Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
• Strong collaboration skills and ability to drive independent work.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English.

An Ideal Candidate Also Has

• Experience with certifications and testing in industrial/automotive settings (ISO16750, AECQ100, etc.).
• Schematic and layout experience in Altium and Cadence Allegro.
• Systems design expertise with cameras and extreme environmental conditions.
• Experience with design for supply, reliability, testing, and manufacturing.

Compensation Philosophy

Samsara’s compensation program delivers total direct compensation—base salary, variable bonus, and RSUs—at or above market. Eligible roles may receive RSU awards at hire and yearly refresh grants. Performance‑based awards can exceed market levels for top performers.
