Public Safety Emergency Call Taker I/II – Prince George’s County Prince George’s County Government offers a dynamic and inclusive workplace with 30 agencies dedicated to serving residents. The county is located just minutes from Washington, DC, combining urban vibrancy with serene surroundings.

About the Position Call Takers receive incoming calls via the 9‑1‑1 system’s emergency or non‑emergency lines, enter and transmit appropriate emergency information and codes into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, and provide pre‑arrival and post‑dispatch instructions to callers while recording data in CAD. They must remain familiar with emergency and dispatch protocols, handle high‑pressure situations, and perform detailed data entry under strict timing.

Operate a workstation comprising Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) 9‑1‑1, GIS mapping tools, CAD, and related repositories to triage and process calls.

Initiate calls for service using appropriate protocols and provide pre‑arrival instructions, including CPR when applicable.

Determine type of service required for incoming emergency or non‑emergency requests and initiate calls for service in accordance with dispatch protocols.

Use headset or computer‑based communication equipment to process and record pertinent information according to agency procedures.

Make computer inquiries and interpret information received from various agencies via the computer.

Operate technical systems necessary to process 9‑1‑1 calls, including the deaf teletype system, text‑to‑9‑1‑1 computer function, language line, mapping programs, and CAD.

Provide emergency pre‑arrival and post‑arrival instructions to callers to mitigate or lessen impact of their emergency prior to responder arrival.

Gather, classify, and supplement pertinent information from callers and enter it into CAD, consistent with protocols.

Utilize life support protocols authorized under the Maryland Emergency Medical Dispatch license/certification to provide appropriate instructions to callers.

Establish communications with hearing‑impaired callers through the Maryland Relay 7‑1‑1 telephone system.

Identify non‑English speaking callers and use the language translation service as necessary to complete call processing.

Use NCIC, METERS, and other databases to obtain information on criminal history, warrants, missing persons, driver history, stolen vehicles, and firearms.

Refer callers to other county, state, or federal agencies or outside jurisdictions when appropriate and maintain logs and records.

Qualifications Minimum qualifications:

High school diploma or G.E.D.

One (1) year practical work experience demonstrating use of Windows‑based computer programs.

Successfully pass agency‑specified entrance examination.

Conditions of Employment

Pass administered 9‑1‑1 Specialist exam (previous pass may waive test).

Work ten‑ or twelve‑hour rotating shifts.

Successfully pass a background investigation, medical examination, drug screen, and psychological screening.

Complete Academic (Phase 1) training with a minimum 80% score on all assessments.

Complete NAED Emergency Telecommunicator Course (ETC) with an 80% score.

Complete NAED Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) course with an 80% score.

Complete NAED Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) course with an 80% score.

Complete NAED Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD) course with an 80% score.

Complete Maryland State NCIC CN2 training with an 80% score.

Complete CPR/BLS course with an 80% score.

Be willing to serve as an essential employee during emergencies and other required times.

Have reliable transportation to the primary center in Bowie, MD, or backup center in Landover, MD.

Meet all training and performance standards as required by the agency.

Wear and use protective apparel and equipment during duties.

Selection Process

Phase 1: Qualifications Review & Standards Assessment, Computerized Pre‑Employment Examination, Preliminary Screening.

Phase 2: Background Investigation, Psychological Screening, Medical Examination & Drug Screening.

Phase 3: Final Offer of Employment, Successful Completion of Public Safety Communications Training Session.

Reasons for Disqualification

Previous disqualification for this or other public safety positions.

Deception or falsification on application or documents.

Poor work history.

Poor driving record (suspended license/DWI/DUI).

History of crimes, felony/misdemeanor convictions, or illegal drug use.

Failure to meet physical and mental standards.

Failure to present a professional appearance.
