Director of Music/Pastoral Assistant - University Christian Church (Los Angeles, CA) University Christian Church (https://www.univcc.org) is a Word and gospel‑centered, multiethnic church community located in the Los Angeles community of Ladera Heights. We passionately worship and serve the Triune God with heart, soul, mind, and strength. We aim to radiate Christian love to those within our community, as well as to passionately and intentionally present the message of the cross to our community and broader city. We seek a Pastoral Assistant who can also serve as the Director of Music.

Position Summary This position combines two roles. The Pastoral Assistant (20–29 hours) will support the senior pastor and other ministry leaders in day‑to‑day operations, including administrative tasks, pastoral care, and ministry coordination. The Director of Music/Assistant Pastor of Music (15–20 hours) will lead the congregation in worship through music, ensuring services are spiritually vibrant, edifying, and aligned with the church’s mission.

Key Responsibilities – Pastoral Assistant Administrative Support

Assist the senior pastor with scheduling meetings, appointments, and church‑related events.

Prepare and proofread correspondence and other church communications as requested.

Manage the church calendar and ensure that all meetings and events are organized efficiently.

Maintain and organize church files, including member records, event details, and important documents.

Handle church‑related office tasks such as managing phone calls, emails, and regular mail.

Pastoral Care

Assist the senior pastor in providing pastoral care to church members, including phone calls and emails to those in need.

Coordinate and schedule pastoral care visits so members receive support during difficult times.

Organize and assist certain meetings for church members as needed under the senior pastor’s guidance.

Worship Service and Event Coordination

Support the planning and execution of worship services, ensuring logistics are in place.

Assist in organizing church events, programs, and activities, including conferences, retreats, and community outreach initiatives.

Help prepare for and coordinate special services such as baptisms, weddings, funerals, and communion services.

Communication and Outreach

Assist with church communications, including creating and distributing newsletters, bulletins, and social media content.

Manage church databases, keeping contact information for members, volunteers, and visitors up‑to‑date.

Support the development and implementation of outreach programs, helping connect with the community and engage new members.

Respond to inquiries from church members and the community in a timely and professional manner.

Volunteer Coordination

Assist in recruiting, scheduling, and managing volunteers for church services, events, and ministries.

Maintain records of volunteer participation and ensure volunteers are properly trained and equipped for their roles.

Foster positive relationships with volunteers and encourage ongoing engagement in the life of the church.

Leadership Support

Provide administrative support to other pastoral staff and ministry leaders as needed.

Assist in preparing reports, documents, and other materials for church leadership meetings.

Attend staff meetings and contribute to discussions about church activities, programs, and goals.

General Office Management

Help ensure the church office runs smoothly, including front desk and management of supplies, equipment, and technology needs.

Serve as the primary point of contact for visitors, church members, and vendors during office hours.

Maintain office organization and ensure that all files and materials are properly stored and accessible.

Key Responsibilities – Director of Music Worship Leadership

Collaborate with the Senior Pastor to plan and implement Sunday worship services.

Lead worship during weekend services, special events, and other church activities.

Develop and implement a comprehensive worship strategy that aligns with the church’s mission, vision, and theological values.

Ensure the worship experience is spiritually vibrant, welcoming, and engaging.

Select songs and coordinate worship sets that reflect the church's style and theological convictions.

Worship Team Development

Recruit, train, and mentor musicians, vocalists, and other worship team members.

Coordinate rehearsals to ensure team members are well‑prepared for services.

Foster a healthy and supportive environment within the worship team.

Provide individual and group training for team members on musical and spiritual growth.

Worship Planning and Coordination

Collaborate with the Senior Pastor and other ministry leaders to align worship services with sermon passages, themes, and church events.

Plan worship services, choosing songs, preparing liturgies, and coordinating with technical teams.

Manage the worship ministry calendar to ensure the smooth execution of regular services and special events.

Spiritual Leadership

Provide spiritual guidance to the worship team, encouraging a lifestyle of worship and personal devotion.

Lead by example in living out the values of worship, discipleship, and service.

Foster an atmosphere of prayer, reflection, and worship within the team and congregation.

Administrative Duties

Manage the worship ministry budget and allocate resources appropriately.

Maintain and oversee the scheduling of volunteers and worship team members.

Handle purchasing and upkeep of worship‑related equipment and resources.

Prepare and submit reports on ministry activities and progress.

Professional Development

Seek opportunities for training, development, and growth in musical, spiritual, and leadership areas.

Evaluate worship services and events to identify areas for improvement and innovation.

Participate in the Service review with the Senior Pastor.

Pastoral Care

Be available to pray for and care for the church congregation, especially those involved in the worship ministry.

Qualifications

Spiritual Maturity : A committed Christian with a deep personal relationship with Christ and a solid understanding of biblical teachings.

Experience : Previous experience in church administration, ministry, or a related field is preferred.

Communication Skills : Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with church members, staff, and the public.

Organizational Skills : Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently, with attention to detail.

Confidentiality : Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality.

Computer Skills : Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and church management software such as Planning Center.

Team Player : Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and support others in their roles.

Pastoral Sensitivity : Demonstrated empathy and pastoral sensitivity when interacting with individuals in need of care and support.

Leadership Experience : Previous experience in worship ministry leadership.

Technical Skills : Familiarity with sound systems, audiovisual technology, and software tools for planning worship services.

Education : Formal or informal theological training or equivalent experience is preferred; a music or worship arts degree is a plus.

Musical Proficiency : Skilled in leading worship with an instrument or vocals and familiar with various musical styles.

Humble and Humorous : Willing to work alongside others, receive feedback, and maintain integrity.

Godly : A person of honesty, integrity, and a heart for worship and ministry.

Work Environment

This is a part‑time mostly on‑site position averaging 20–25 hours weekly, with the hope of expanding in the future.

The position may require some evening and weekend work, especially during church services, events, and special activities.

The Pastoral Assistant will work closely with the senior pastor, church staff, and volunteers to meet the needs of the church.
