Summary of Classification Part i – Summary Of Classification

This class is accountable for providing security services for the safety and welfare of students, staff, and visitors while on school grounds; monitoring the main lobby/entrance and other areas; assuring student compliance with school and District rules; communicating information in response to inquiries; providing a positive role model and promoting positive relationships with students.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education: High School Diploma or GED; Associate degree preferred.

General Experience: Two (2) years of full-time employment or equivalent; preferred experience working with school-age children, background in military, law enforcement, corrections or similar; experience in an urban school district and/or a multi-cultural environment.

Licenses/Certifications: Current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Class D Operator’s License required; CPR/First Aid Certificate may be required.

Knowledge of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and District policies;

Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Scientific Research Based Interventions (SRBI);

Knowledge of standard safety practices and procedures;

Knowledge of the similarities and differences between cognitive, communicative, physical, social, and emotional needs of students;

Knowledge and respect for diverse backgrounds;

Oral and written communication skills;

Interpersonal and social skills;

Ability to administer first aid in emergency situations;

Ability to analyze situations quickly and determine proper course of action;

Ability to apply PBIS and SRBI principles;

Essential Functions

Assess danger and call for assistance if necessary.

Assist other personnel to ensure a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.

Assist teachers and administrators in supervising students for compliance with school policies and the student behavior code.

Assist teachers in escorting disruptive students to the administration office for corrective action.

Assist teachers and administrators in loading and unloading school buses, ensuring safe conduct.

Communicate school policies and enforcement procedures to students, personnel, and visitors to ensure understanding.

Control hallway disturbances and defiance, and may control nearby classroom disturbances.

Control entrances and exits of visitors, students, and employees.

Direct students to correct classrooms and escort as needed.

Establish and maintain satisfactory, respectful working relationships with the school environment.

Inspect restrooms to prevent loitering or damage.

Intervene to halt or prevent fights, disturbances, or incidents and diffuse violent situations.

Issue visitor passes, confront unauthorized persons, detain, issue trespass warnings, and call for assistance as needed.

Maintain a commitment to ongoing professional development and participate in professional organizations and committees related to school safety.

Maintain awareness of vehicles entering and leaving school grounds.

Maintain communication via portable radios with administration and other hall monitors.

Maintain complete, accurate, and legible records related to assigned activities.

Meet and greet students, staff, and public in a positive manner.

Monitor students’ first hour for tardiness, check hall passes, visitor passes, and walk through visitors’ arrivals and departures.

Monitor various areas of school grounds using multiple security cameras.

Report any inappropriate activities or unauthorized persons to appropriate personnel.

Resolve student conflicts and referral involving student misconduct.

Respond immediately to reports of drugs, weapons, or other emergencies.

Routinely inspect exterior entry doors for security.

Testify at district or judicial proceedings as needed.

Verify and enforce pop pass authenticity after second bell.

Warn violators of rule infractions, detain suspicious or criminal actors.

Watch for disturbances, fights, unauthorized visitors, or criminal activity.

Perform other related duties as required.

Working Conditions, Physical and Mental Requirements Employees must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility and visual and auditory acuity and maintain such fitness to perform job duties. A physical examination may be required.
