Job Summary Under general supervision, the vehicle maintenance technician diagnoses, maintains, repairs, and services diesel, gasoline, propane, and natural gas‑powered school buses, heavy and light trucks, vans, construction equipment, and automobiles. The technician operates a variety of hand, power and shop tools, performs safety inspections, and executes related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Diagnose and perform major and minor engine repairs, including inspection and replacement of pistons, valves, bearings, and related components.

Diagnose, repair, and adjust fuel, ignition, electrical, and cooling systems.

Repair and adjust steering mechanisms, wheel alignment, and suspension components.

Conduct safety inspections on school buses to ensure compliance with applicable laws, codes, and regulations.

Inspect, service, and repair braking systems on buses, trucks, vans, and equipment.

Repair vehicle body and chassis parts using hand and power tools, as well as electric arc and oxy‑acetylene welding equipment.

Perform road tests and operate vehicles as required, inspecting them in shop and field.

Service and repair vehicle air‑conditioning systems.

Diagnose engine electronic computer issues using diagnostic scope.

Inspect, service, and adjust smog control systems.

Conduct field electrical, hydraulic, and other repairs.

Perform preventive maintenance on buses, construction equipment, trucks, vans, and other vehicle types.

Read and interpret manuals, drawings, and specifications.

Estimate labor, material, and equipment required for assignments.

Maintain shop equipment, fuel station, compressor, and fuel islands.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience or Education:

Two years of journey‑level experience in the maintenance and repair of light, medium, or heavy‑duty gasoline, diesel, electric, or natural gas‑powered motorized equipment.

Knowledge:

Overhaul, maintenance, and repair techniques for diesel, gasoline, propane, and natural gas vehicles.

Operation and maintenance of hand, power, and shop tools, including hydraulic systems.

Safety regulations and work‑method requirements.

Oxy‑acetylene and electric arc welding equipment and materials.

Shop mathematics and welding procedures.

Lubrication systems and related oils and greases.

Federal, state, and local laws governing school‑bus maintenance.

Ability:

Diagnose and repair a wide variety of fuel, electrical, and mechanical systems.

Operate shop tools and equipment, including shop lifts.

Estimate materials and equipment, prepare records, and maintain inventory.

Use shop mathematics for calculations.

Fabricate and repair metal parts and tools.

Maintain safety procedures and build cooperative working relationships.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid California Commercial Driver License, Class A or B, with air‑brake qualified.

Passenger Endorsement (P) obtained within forty‑five (45) working days of placement.

ASE certification desirable.

Physical and Mental Demands

Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, crawl, and perform moderate to heavy physical exertion.

Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Reach in all directions and stand, sit, and walk for extended periods.

Work in a garage, bus yard, or transportation center environment.
