What You Will Do Weapons Engineering Verification & Validation Division (V) is seeking an R&D Manager 4 to serve as Group Leader of the Nondestructive Testing & Evaluation Group (V-6). As part of the division management team, the selected candidate will provide technical leadership and management; participating and fostering a team environment with engineers and scientists within LANL, and other DOE facilities. V-6 provides research, development, and application of state-of-the-art non-destructive inspections for diverse internal and external programmatic missions.
Current group capabilities include radiography (x-ray & neutron), computed tomography (CT), ultrasonics, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, eddy current, dye penetrant, magnetic particle and x-ray fluorescence, as well as x-ray, ultrasound and eddy current simulation. Work occurs in multiple facilities at LANL and other Nuclear Weapons Enterprise (NWE) sites. The staff is comprised of R&D Engineers and Scientists with backgrounds in physics, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science/programming, as well as Engineering technologists and process and sampling technicians. The group currently consists of multiple teams involved in performing evaluations, interpretation and reporting of inspection findings, process qualification & documentation, field radiography, and accident response as well as providing new inspection capabilities and creating solutions to applied NDT&E problems throughout the Laboratory and the NWE.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements
Demonstrated record of technical achievement in engineering or a related scientific field and implementation of solutions to technical problems.
A strong record of achievement in or more of the group's mission and/or capability areas, as demonstrated by technical contributions, project management, and supervisory/technical leadership experience.
Leadership & Management
Record of strong leadership and a demonstrated commitment to the professional development and mentoring of employees and competence in leading teams and building rapport with employees, peers, and supervisors.
Experience in technical leadership and/or program management, including success in program development, resource planning and allocation, technical program execution and negotiation.
Demonstrated experience managing or operating within moderate hazard facilities while fostering a safe, secure, and environmentally conscious environment.
Demonstrated experience managing personnel, including conflict resolution.
Communication
Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills, which includes the ability to engage in technical conversations with all levels of staff and Laboratory management.
Collaboration and Team Work
Demonstrated ability to contribute to effective, intellectually diverse teams, and interact with colleagues with diverse professional, educational and experience backgrounds. Demonstrated experience advising and guiding experimental work including mentoring staff, students and technicians.
Education/Experience Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications
Demonstrated knowledge of LANL weapon systems, sub-systems, and components.
A working knowledge of Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation methods including Radiography, Ultrasonic Inspection and Computed Tomography.
Demonstrated experience working directly laboratory customers to identify schedule and resource availability and bring group assignments to a timely completion.
Experience in process hazard analysis, development of integrated work documents, and safety basis operations.
Demonstrated experience with classified computing, classified data, and/or classified parts.
Familiarity and application of the SCoR principles of a safe workplace
Active Q clearance.
Work Location The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
