Crew Leader I - Water Distribution

Overview
The Department of Utilities is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Crew Leader I in the Water Distribution Division. The successful candidate will lead crews in repairing, maintaining, and installing water services for the City of Norfolk, ensuring safety and quality of work.
Essential Functions
Supervises employees in construction, maintenance, repair, or upkeep of facilities, ensuring quality of work, safety precautions, task assignment, and employee training.
Installs fire hydrants, water lines, valves, water mains, and force valves, ensuring equipment is securely assembled, cleaned, flushed, and backfilled as necessary.
Repairs water mains and taps by excavating to leak location, installing clamps, force lines, fixings, water meters, washers, service straps, copper tubing, and backfilling.
Performs supervisory duties by assigning tasks, allocating equipment, maintaining the yard, checking equipment, creating reports, timesheets, equipment sheets, and evaluating employee performance.
Climbs ladders and stairs, bends, pushes, pulls, stoops, and lifts up to 75 lbs.; stands for extended periods; performs confined‑space entry as required.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency (four years of high school or equivalent).
Two years of experience (preferred experience supervising a maintenance crew).
Valid driver’s license.
Work Location Combined Operations Center: 1316 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk, VA
Work Hours Monday to Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; nights/on‑call duty rotation as well.
Compensation One-time $5,000 signing bonus. Salary commensurate with experience.
