Responsibilities
Supervise offenders in housing units/living quarters and community supervision centers.
Check/count offenders; inspect housing units for safety/security violations; check for health/safety hazards; prepare reports on offender violations/behaviors/mechanical deficiencies/security breaches of facility rules.
Interview offenders to obtain information relating to their residential and family relationships/employment/educational records; contact family members/employers/friends to verify offender's background; collect/verify offender's legal case history and police reports; prepare reports; maintain records of investigative findings.
Retrieve information from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES), Missouri Department of Revenue, and Missouri Department of Corrections' computer databases; respond to confirmed active warrants; enter/cancel warrants on escaped and/or absconded offenders.
Photograph and issue identification cards to offenders; ensure offenders have parole orders; assist offenders with job search activities; investigate/monitor/enter schedule changes for offenders on electronic monitoring; escort and/or transport offenders to their designated locations.
Assist in the maintenance of databases/chronological shift records/inventory/vehicle logs; troubleshoot equipment problems; answer and log emergency calls from offenders/family members/general public; contact appropriate staff to resolve issues; assist Probation and Parole Officers with court hearings/home visits.
Supervise movement/location of offenders inside and outside of the facility; intervene, in emergency situations to gain control of offenders and/or perform CPR; monitor/control/document offender's consumption of prescription and over‑the‑counter medications; discuss minor adjustment problems with offenders; refer major problems to the supervisor; promote rehabilitation by modifying offender attitudes/discouraging undesirable behaviors/encouraging constructive activities; administer substance‑abuse assessment devices to offenders; collect DNA samples; supervise visits with offenders; search visitors/offenders/property/living quarters/buildings/grounds for contraband.
Provide after‑hours assistance to departmental staff/general public; order/maintain/issue supplies; exercise some independence in the performance of duties; receive general administrative direction; work is reviewed by a designated supervisor for conformance with established policies and procedures; perform other related work as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
Must be a minimum of 18 years old and a valid vehicle operator's license.
Ability to pass a background investigation administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections.
By assignment a position may require successful completion of safety training, which may include firearms/defensive tactics/CPR/First Aid, with annual re‑qualification; successful completion of training administered by the Missouri State Highway Patrol in the Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES) prior to regular appointment.
Shift and Stipend Options (if applicable)
A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (e.g., institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
A $0.75 per hour maximum security stipend if you work full‑time at a qualifying facility.
A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing stipend if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.
The Department of Corrections offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years. Promotion from within is encouraged for employees looking for distinctive career paths.
